It would also be the exact scenario wherein Hammel would want to try to capitalize on his strong performance in FA.

Jon Lester threw more inning last year than Brett Anderson has over the past 4 seasons combined, accumulating more fWAR than Anderson did over his last 5 seasons.

yes, but we don't pay for past performance; he's set for a career renaissance!

@jonmorosi Clarification on Hammel deal: He will only be able to void 2017 club option if he reaches very high performance thresholds in 2016.

But, wouldn't that be exactly the scenario that the Cubs would want to exercise that option?

There are several scenarios in which the Cubs would want to exercise the option. That's the best one of them, but (without knowing what the amount of the option is) there are tons of other scenarios in which they'd want him back for a year at what I assume is a very reasonable price.

The option is for 12 million.

Here is a very scientific visualization of the situation:

Hammel's performance

Bad |-------------------|---------------|----| Good
      Cubs Decline Cubs Accept ^
                                          Hammel voids

This is kind of like getting a 32-inch westinghouse for christmas.

I'm sure PTR's family is all very familiar with the feeling.

That's a terrific deal for Hammel. Have to believe he could have gotten more if he'd waited, but he had a great rapport with Bosio and the organization and clearly wanted to be back.

Also - this myth that Hammel was "batting practice" for Oakland really needs to stop. He basically had one bad month. Over his last 8 starts Hammel had an ERA under 3 with a 1.0 WHIP.

This becomes 2/17MIL if you count the 3M the Cubs saved last season shipping Hammel to the A's.

uhh

He's paying the Cubs $20m if you count all the money they didn't pay him all the other times he wasn't employed by them.

2/-20 when you account for the fact that the cubs didn't sign sammy sosa to a 20 year 800 million dollar extension in 2005

the starting point is whatever you want it to be

It makes no [expletive] difference what the starting point is. 2/20 with a club option for Hammel is a great deal for the club.

Fangraphs has updated their WAR projections. Hammel is our second-best SP and puts us up to 8th in the NL and 5.3 behind the Rockies for fifth.

Uhhh, the Rockies are projected for fifth in the NL??

Interestingly, yes. But 16th overall. They think the NL is a giant turd-fest, and they might be right.

@BleacherNation League source: Hammel can void 2017 option in deal w/Cubs if he's traded, or if he reaches 200IP or top 10 in CY in 2016.

The 'if traded' thing is worthy of consideration, but otherwise it's a 'if you do things you've never done in your career in 2016, sure you can void the option'.

for his Cubs career: 28 GS, 2.89 ERA, [glow=red]0.97 WHIP[/glow], 1.6 BB/9, 8.8 K/9, 3.09 FIP, 3.10 xFIP, 3.8 fWAR

how about a lifetime contract for The Boz

And if he actually reaches those milestones in 2016, I'll be so happy about his previous year's performance that I wouldn't even care if he opted out of his contract.
