Looks like the Orioles are going to sign Everth Cabrera. Even given his off the field stuff, I'm a little surprised it took this long.

I'm surprised it's not the Mets.

Rafael Soriano is still a FA, is he hurt or asking for crazy money or something? He put up good numbers last year, not that I want us to sign him but I'm surprised nobody has yet.

From opening day to the end of June he had a 1.09 ERA in 33 innings. From July 1st to the end of the season he had a 5.59 ERA in 29 innings. He collapsed.

I'd probably do Russell for Hamels.

lol

You're getting Hamels for 4 or 5 years, Russell for 6.5. The years of control are almost identical, and Hamels is really good at baseball *right now*.

2.5 years isn't almost identical, and you're also paying one guy 23 million and the other pennies (for awhile). Why not just keep the potential awesomeness of Addison Russell for 6.5 years and use the extra 23 million saved to pick up a rental at the deadline and then sign someone as good as Hamels in the offseason? I don't think the extra years you'd have to give a FA over Hamels are worth Russell.

Depending on how they manage his callup, they could be getting Russell for 6.95 years.

Or 6.01. And Hamels might be 5 years. It's anywhere from 1.01-2.95 years.

Because the deadline might be too late and you come up just a bit short. The Cubs should be trying *really* hard to avoid a scenario where they are just a game or three short of making the playoffs, and that's a pretty significant possibility right now.

For all we know, Addison Russell could be as valuable as Domonic Brown or Jesus Montero. Given the state of the the organization, I think trading for 2015 wins at the expense of future wins should be an extremely high priority.

Am I saying I'd no-doubt, slam-dunk do Russell for Hamels? Nope. But I'd think about it, and I don't think it's as laughable as some do.

I think it's pretty laughable once you factor in that the prospect risk is mitigated pretty heavily by the older pitchers get hurt or inexplicably fall off a cliff risk.

Ben Badler @BenBadler

The Rangers have signed Rougned Odor's younger brother. He is also an infielder, and he is also named Rougned Odor.

I think the parents need to work on their creativity.

Imagine the Rangers surprise when they found out they signed the wrong Odor.

The chances of that option being picked up are very low. The chances of Russell's clock being mismanaged to that degree are very low. It's very likely to be a 2.5+ year difference. There's also the strong possibility of being able to extend Russell at a team friendly deal to buy out his first couple years of FA.

So the team would likely have Russell for at least 162.5% as long as Hamels, while paying a fraction of the price, while receiving higher projected value.

The only argument for making the trade is to maximize the chances in 2015. But you are subtracting from your chances over the next six years to do so.

I'd rather wait until the deadline and nab someone like Cueto for a lesser prospect package.

He has an uncle named Rouglas.

And Rouglas has sons Rouglas, and Rouglas, and Roberto.

He also has a father that was a really big Scooby Doo fan.

Castillo traded for some too old A ball reliever. WSR will be intrigued.

Wood traded for an organizational top 20, maybe a former high pick. (Don't like this)

Jaxon kept as a long-man until he's DFAd in June.
