Am I the only one that would like to see us pass on Lester and Shields (would be fine with Scherzer, but doubt we spend the cash for him), get guys like McCarthy and Brett Anderson/Josh Johnson, and make a big push for Price and Maeda next year, instead? (Assuming Maeda isn't posted this offseason)

The short answer is no, you probably aren't the only one.

The longer answer is you should be the only one because passing on guys today in hopes of getting others guys a year from now is a great way to not get any guys.

...I'm not advocating getting no one.

no one of consequence

If McCarthy is now no one of consequence, then I think maybe expectations are a touch too high. He's better than all of our current SPs save Arrieta. What are you talking about?

Maeda isn't even likely to be as good as Hammel, McCarthy or other mid rotation types out there right now. There's no reason at all to pass on elite talent for a guy like him.

You shut your lying mouth.

Personally, my dream offseason involves Maeda + Liriano on the SP front, not sure if Liriano getting a QO has changed my mind on the latter.

Lester + McCarthy (or Anderson)

I can't find any position player that I would love at the likely price.

If I'm signing a qualified guy and losing my 2nd round pick, I want to sign a second qualified guy as well then. Losing your second and third doesn't hurt if you've added two big talents to the roster.(and no, Im not saying 2nd and 3rds are that valuable anyway, just would rather get two impact guys now)

I think the worst offseason we wind up with is something like Hammel, Masterson, Montero, and Aoki. And if that's what we DID wind up with, my guess is we still enter the year projected around .500 and buy at the deadline.

Why do you like Maeda so much?

Yeah, I want Lester plus one of McCarthy or Anderson too.

Would love to pry Tyson Ross away from San Diego but I assume he'll be too expensive a trade target.

Lester 6/150

Liriano 3/45?? (I have absolutely no clue here) or McCarthy 4/60??

And what the hell - Martin 4/60

May and thereafter

C - Martin

1B - Rizzo

2B - Javy

SS - Starlin

3B - Valbuena

LF - Bryant

CF - Alcantara

RF - Soler

SP - Lester, Arrieta, Liriano/McCarthy, Hendricks, Wada/Wood/Doubront/Straily

RP - Rondon, Ramirez, Strop, Vizcaino, Rivero, Wright

Bench - Castillo and some other guys

If you're signing Martin to a four year deal, you'd better keep Bryant at 3B so you can move Schwarber to LF.

I'm not going to let Schwarber's chances at catching dictate what we do right now at catcher at all.

I'm far from comfy on giving Liriano or McCarthy deals anywhere near that.

My ideal offseason would be Lester at whatever(6-150 and I don't blink, I'd go higher if needed), Masterson on a one year deal, trade Travis Wood for Montero, trade EJax for Upton with Braves eating some salary, and sign Andrew Miller to a 4/28 type deal.(I think he'll get at least that)

Following offseason replace Masterson with Price, Shark, Zimmermann, or another TOR type available at that time.

My ideal - we actually have $60M to spend this offseason after arbitration raises and payroll projecting to rise in coming years...

Lester 6/150 (20, 26, 26, 26, 26, 26)

McCarthy 4/60 (15, 15, 15, 15)

Tomas 7/100 (5, 10, 15, 15, 15, 20, 20)

Martin 4/60 (15, 15, 15, 15)

with 5M for bench upgrades.

May and thereafter

C - Martin

1B - Rizzo

2B - Javy

SS - Starlin

3B - Bryant

LF - Tomas

CF - Alcantara

RF - Soler

SP - Lester, Arrieta, McCarthy, Hendricks, Wada/Wood/Doubront/Straily/Turner

RP - Rondon, Ramirez, Strop, Vizcaino, Rivero, Wright

Bench - Castillo, Valbuena, IF2, OF1, OF2

If I have to lose money off there, I ditch Martin first.

Who gives a [expletive] about QOs?

I really wanted Liriano, but then I learned we'll have to give up our 25th ranked prospect and probably sign him to a cheaper contract, so passssssssss

I like the Lester and McCarthy additions, but not really sure about giving too many years to Martin. McCarthy at 4 years $15m per is a little risky considering his health history, but won't be surprised.

I'm sure there will be a trade that makes us pretty happy.

What makes you believe Masterson isn't broken?

And what makes you want to spend $28M on a reliever?

Especially when the only real need in the bullpen is a loogy and that's a lot of money for a loogy.

I'm really warming up to the idea of giving Tomas the $100M he's looking for.

1) if Bryant can hang at 3B, it fills one of the two most obvious holes on the diamond (catcher)

2) At age 24, we should be paying for future performance

3) we should be able to stretch the deal to a reasonable per year figure

4) we should be able to backload that contract to when we'll be getting increased revenues

#4 is the critical one to me. We should be able to add a significant talent with a much more minimal impact to current payroll than any comparable player in free agency.

Isn't Tomas supposed to be more Javy than Javy (in the bad way)?

I'll pass.

I'll pass.

I've given up doubting Cuban position players after being so wrong about Abreu last year.

I'm not sure there's been a player in baseball history more Javy than Javy.

Oh I'm sure there are plenty of them not in MLB
