I wonder if he goes to LA to join Freidman

Yeah, that's what I'm actually leaning towards; seems like he has a real shot of sliding in to that manager spot there pretty soon.

That's what people thought about him in Tampa too. With how many times he has been passed over, or not even a candidate for, managerial jobs, there must be something missing that is preventing him from making that leap. I'm beginning to think that he may just be a bench coach lifer.

I'm sure he wouldn't be the first or last manager to have done that.

It wasn't Martinez that banged Cindy, it was Palmereo. The trade prompted Dawson to say that they traded the wrong 1st baseman. Hawk didn't care for Grace....and now you know the rest of the story.

Kaplan just asked Hoyer if he had any thoughts on Martinez's availability and he was somewhat candid.

Said they plan to talk to Joe about it and that they really enjoyed their sit down interview with him last year.

The possibility of Dave Martinez returning to the Chicago Cubs remains strong.

General manager Jed Hoyer said Wednesday morning that he will talk to manager Joe Maddon about Martinez, 50, who recently resigned as coach from the Tampa Bay Rays after being passed over for the Rays' managerial position.

We’re going to talk to Joe about it,"; Hoyer said on the "Kap and Haugh Show" on WGWG-FM 87.7. "Obviously, (Maddon) had a great relationship with Davey. We’ve talk about him in the past, how strongly he feels about him and what he did for him and trying to replicate that.

"Obviously now that he’s available, Theo (Epstein) and I really enjoyed our sitdown with him last year during the manager hiring process."

Martinez, who played for the Cubs from 1986-88 and 2000, served as Maddon's bench coach for the past seven seasons.

Since Martinez was under contract by the Rays for 2015, the Cubs or any interested team would need to seek permission from the Rays to talk to him. It's uncertain whether the Rays would seek compensation should Martinez leave.

Where Martinez would fit is uncertain, since Brandon Hyde currently is the bench coach. Third base coach Gary Jones was selected by Rick Renteria, who was fired last month when Maddon became available.

if he resigned, why would we need to ask permission to interview him?

He's under contract and going to be paid by Tampa next year. I think the permission would be a formality and the use of "resign" isn't technically correct.

what?

I informed the Rays this week that I have chosen to move forward and consider other opportunities that may present themselves outside the organization," Martinez announced in a statement. "It was a hard decision that I think is best for myself and the Rays. I want to thank our fans for their overwhelming support. It has meant the world to my family and me. For the past nine years, the players and staff have been an extension of my family and the memories that we have all shared and the relationships that have been built will stay with me forever. I can't thank them enough for all they have meant to me.

why would the rays be obligated to pay him this season? he quit his job

He is moving forward and considering other opportunities.

This is what happens when an under contract internal candidate does not get the head job.

This happens in sports all the time.

I don't think Starlin Castro is going to like Joe Maddon:

"Respect 90... going to make daily push for our players to respect that distance..run hard for 90 feet, and the respect will come back to you"

Joe Maddon loves books, but he doesn’t manage by one. Maddon said that particular book was written so long ago it doesn’t really apply today. Maddon is known for thinking outside of the box and trying things with his lineups to get the most out of his players.

After he took over as Cubs manager, Joe Maddon was asked about lineup construction.

“I think every manager’s dream is to have a lineup that he really likes 1-8 or 1-9 and stay with it versus a righty and then stay with it versus a lefty,” Maddon said. “I think we have to be creative in regards to how we build the lineup versus righties and lefties.”

“When you just want to talk about the static stuff, it’s really easy and everybody would love to have, it’s not that easy to do and be successful especially with all of the moving parts we have there with the Cubs and Wrigley. I am really eager to look into all of that. I’ve already talked to Theo [Epstein] and Jed [Hoyer] and some of the brainiacs over there to start getting me some intel and information regarding how to do all of that stuff.”

Joe Maddon has either coached or managed in the American League but has some experience with managing a game under National League rules.

“The National League, I love it, we’ve played against it in Interleague ball, but there is a lot of stuff I have to learn and I need some help,” Maddon said. “I am all about getting help and getting other people’s opinions on things.”

When the Rays were at Wrigley in early August, Maddon batted his pitcher eighth in all three games. A tactic Tony LaRussa used for many years with the Cardinals in order to give Albert Pujols more opportunities to hit with runners on base.

According to a report from the Tribune, Joe Maddon has asked the Cubs analytics department “to research information related to pitchers batting eighth.”

Joe Maddon used 129 different lineups with the Rays last year, down from 147 in 2013 and 151 in 2012. If the Cubs can show there are benefits to hitting the pitcher eighth, Maddon has shown he is not opposed to trying a variety of lineup combinations to produce wins.
