Great piece by Christina Kahrl on the Maddon hiring, and what it really means for the Cubs: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/53197/skip-the-stats-maddon-an-inspired-choice

Also a great point about why it was smart to not hire Sandberg beyond the stats reasons: nobody cares when you fire Sveum or Renteria after a year or two. People would care, however, if you unceremoniously dumped Sandberg after a couple rebuilding years.

Oh man, you're getting haunted but good.

"And I did say doo doo there..."

Maddon is a walking dictionary of quotations, that's for sure. Everything is rosy and perfect today, but there's no denying he's an unusually articulate and thoughtful guy with a great sense of humor. No matter what the sabermetrics guys say, that matters.

Hey, it's fun when a guy can give give good press. Lou could, and it was enjoyable.

Kap-Wittenmeyer-Rogers-Mooney might make my eyes bleed.

In no way, shape, or form should Mooney be listed with those clowns.

The other great line - so politically incorrect - was "That's a shot and a beer. The Hazelden way." I know he really said Hazelten, but it's too great a coincidence of words not to laugh.

Remember: all big businesses are evil, including sports teams. They are only tolerable when they are spending ungodly amounts of money to satiate my burning desire to see them do it.

What, are you a liberal? Ha ha 8-)

Why would those be the only options?

Many on NSBB would have gone he same route (except for Kyle)

Almost nobody here wanted this path until they took it. Except for the visionary davearm.

But that's over now. We're about to be awesome.

There were quite a few fans of other teams who, in the immediate wake of Maddon opting out, wanted him to replace their guy (many Cards fans, most notably). Now they are going on about how Maddon is overrated, managers don't make much difference (there is some truth to this) and how the Cubs and Maddon are unscrupulous for doing Renteria dirty.

This is totally predictable "sour grapes" behavior that some of us would no doubt be guilty of if the shoe were on the other foot, but it's still funny.
