Folks..I've been chasing the story all afternoon. No firm confirmations. But ask me if I think Joe Maddon will be Cubs manager? I'd say YES.

Not trying to make news, or pretend I know more confirmed than I do. But this seems to be miraculous, perfect timing. #MaddonCubs

@Buster_ESPN: Rival executives believe that if Joe Maddon winds up with the Cubs, the Rays will investigate the issue of tampering.

Hard to see how they'd have a case

already trying to get some kind of compensation out of this

Buster says Rays likely to investigate tampering if Maddon signs with Cubs. Weird.

Same thing happened with Ozzie and Marlins, no?

Considering the Cubs already have a manager yet everybody in baseball is guessing he will go there, it sounds like there is at the very least, plenty of smoke there.

The nerve of those Cubs, making Andrew Friedman go to the Dodgers and putting an opt-out in Maddon's contract.

The presence of the opt-out wouldn't matter if there were conversations prior to him opting out.

Practically, it makes an enormous difference.

Well yeah, if he didn't have an opt-out and was under contract this would be moot. The point is if there was any contact prior to the opt-out, and all this talk of Maddon to Cubs by everybody around the league suggests there may have been, then they would have a case.

Give em Renteria.

Kaplan thinks it's better than 50/50 and that the fact that the Cubs haven't publicly commented speaks volumes (duh).

Not sure you can bring Rick Renteria back after leaving him out to dry like this. Better give everything to Maddon. (And I have no problem with this, not a fan of Ricky)

Joe Maddon is fine manager, but ethically he should sit out a year, not be the cause of someone to be unjustly fired. usat.ly/1wqHbpf

hahahahahahaha

Wouldn't he be taking a job from someone next year too? Why not just retire because ethics?

Boy, getting Maddon would be huge. It's a bad break for Ricky, but you can't hesitate when a guy of Maddon's ability may be available because of concerns over a guy like Renteria. He was obviously never going to be the long-term answer, and did nothing this year to disprove that opinion. He did what he was brought in to do - say nice things about the kids and do what he was told.

As usual, Miles' take on this is spot-on.

i hope everyone who is all broken up about poor ricky renteria expresses the same sentiments when kris bryant stomps all over luis valbuena's job and straight up steals it at the end of april. it's exactly the same thing. by all accounts, renteria can hang around as the bench coach or the mascot or something. even if we do show him the door, he still gets paid. we should all be so lucky.

I will continue to feel kind of bad for Renteria (in terms of the baseball world, not real life where he's getting paid 7 figures to do nothing) while rejoicing when Bryant comes up to replace an outfielder who's not as good as Valbuena. TAKE THAT.

Yeah, I saw this sentiment on Twitter about Renteria and found it very weird.

I wouldn't avoid Maddon because of guilt/responsibility to Renteria, but those are not the same thing. MLB players get hired over/demoted all the time, MLB managers pretty much never.
