they're still the same awesome team and whatever, but it sucks that they've wasted the easiest part of the schedule because nobody can put the puck in the net.

that sucks for his trade value when he's moved in the offseason

nah, this is/was our last season with the super duper stacked team. there was no reason to reSW a core star yet while they were still able to get under the cap.

It's a stretch to call him a star. And he was the only guy to trade and potentially get back a haul.

The haul wasn't there, other teams knew the Hawks were against the cap. If Stan found a deal I'm sure he would have been gone. But that being said the cap crunch coming Im glad they kept Sharp for another Cup run. Probably wont make a serious run again until 2018.

Not a star? that's ludicrous.

Saying that keeping Sharp was the right move to win another cup this season. Summer of 2015 will be bad, not quite as bad as 2010.

And Sharp is a star.

But is he elite?

I think of Sharp as the 6th best Blackhawk, maybe somebody in the 45-60 range across the NHL, and a guy who could theoretically be a top 2 player on some other rosters. He's the only guy on the roster they can both afford to give up and get some real quality in return while remaining among the elite teams. I've always thought of him as a trade chip, but I'm not that much in favor of it.

If they had wanted to trade Sharp, the haul was there. They've proven time and again that the "teams will know they are up against the cap" theory is silly. As long as you have two interested teams in a player, you have plenty of leverage.

Probably won't make a serious run again until 2018, LOL. As long as they have Toews, Kane, Hossa (if he doesn't rapidly age), and Keith, they've got a chance every year.

Their depth will be gone. LOL

no, no it won't

Depth isn't a problem for the Hawks. They are the envy of the league in terms of having young guys who can easily fill 3rd and 4th line and at least 3rd pairing rolls (Johns, for example, projects higher). They are a bit thin at wing, but centers can (and have - Mark McNeil) be converted. The list is very long, but you can start with this as a primer:

TEAM BREAKDOWN:

Strengths: Teuvo Teravainen has developed well since he was drafted 18th overall in 2012, becoming the best offensive prospect for Chicago since Patrick Kane. The depth at center behind him includes talented prospects at the pro level and longer-term projects making their mark in the NCAA. The team's defensive stable is similarly built with prospects Adam Clendening, Stephen Johns, and Klas Dahlbeck set to anchor the AHL team at the pro level next season, giving the defenders in college and Sweden all the time they need to develop.

Weaknesses: Teravainen excluded, the ultimate upside of top forward prospects like Mark McNeill, Phillip Danault, and Ryan Hartman remains unclear. The signing of Antti Raanta as a free agent proved to be a wise move, but the pecking order behind him amongst the goaltending prospects is murky.

Top 5 Prospects: 1. Teuvo Teravainen, C; 2. Adam Clendening, D; 3. Phillip Danault, C; 4. Mark McNeill, C; 5. Stephen Johns, D.

Key Additions: David Rundblad, D (trade-PHX), Philippe Lefebvre (trade-FLA), Matt Carey (free agent), Trevor van Riemsdyk (free agent).

Key Losses: Brandon Saad (graduation), Brandon Pirri (trade-FLA), Jimmy Hayes (trade-FLA), Dylan Olsen (trade-FLA) Kyle Beach (trade-NYR).

The bigger question facing the Hawks is whether there are any true first / second line and first pairing players there. When Hossa goes he will probably be backfilled by a FA, as he essentially replaced Havlat. The bigger question is Sharp and whether Saad steps into that role or Teuvo is so good at C that Saad doesn't have to score that much.

The Hawks should be fine for a very long time. Stan drafts well (though he's not setting the world on fire at goalie or wing) and he's generally done a nice job in making trades that yield good results (including Versteeg, by the way). The brewing problem is Q's reliance on veterans and seeming unwillingness to let young guys get the minutes they need to develop (TVR, Morin, Leddy (when he was here), Rundbland, etc.). We'll see.

he's only the 5th-6th best player on the hawks because the hawks have a HOF roster. he's absolutely a star and a huge part of the team. he just kind of gets overlooked sometimes because of all the talent on the roster every year. there's no reason to trade him until they absolutely have to.

on a related note, bowman is looking pretty good with the choice to dump leddy. the defense has been tremendous and versteeg has been one of the best players on the team so far.
