rather than all these idiots off the street, why can't santonio return kicks if he can return punts? at least he'd feel less inclined to want to prove himself or whatever is making these idiots take balls out from 10 yards deep

IDK. It's not like he's getting very many touches. Not a part of the offensive gameplan. Bears don't force punts, so he never returns them. He might be cut once Wilson comes back. Can't be trusted to take a knee. I actually cheer when the team kicks the ball out of the back of the endzone against the Bears. Hell, I did it with Hester half the time.

My guess...Holmes is good on punts because he can reliably catch the ball. Which is obviously much more important on punts, rather than kick returns. On KR's, you want someone speedier that you hope can get to the 20 at the very least before being tackled. Holmes isn't in there because he's fast.

Ultimately, it's hard to explain any decisions being made by Joe D at this point.

I've never really understood the need to differentiate between kick and punt returners. I think the skill-set is a lot more similar than NFL teams seem to insist on.

Another CBS mock: http://mweb.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfl-draft-scout/24739639/mock-draft-jets-find-receiver-help-top-10?v=1&vc=4

Bears get Shaq Thompson at 15, Dante Fowler goes 14, Shilique Calhoun goes 20 and Arik Armstead goes 25.

It's interesting how quickly Marcus Peters is becoming the #1 CB on draft boards. I really like him but didn't realize he'd blow up this quickly nationally. He really caugh my eye against UCLA last year and dominated against Ty Montgomery when Washington played Stanford. Of course there are red flags based on his temper tantrum against Illinois.

Completely agree with this.

I understand what Banedon is saying regarding the value of cleanly fielding a punt but the actual return shouldn't be that different.

Yeah, there are some people that just cannot catch punts. Then to have to do so with people bearing down on you, think fast enough to make a move, and get upfield. I can see someone that returns kickoffs not being able to return punts. But if you can return punts, you can return kickoffs.

#Bears announce they have waived CB Isaiah Frey & DE David Bass and promoted CB Al Louis-Jean from practice squad to 53-man roster

Just coming to post. Also got rid of 2 off the practice squad (Roy Philbon-DL and Rashad Ross) and added 2 LBs that were previously on the PS, Terrell Manning and DeDe Lattimore. And brought 5'6" KR Trindon Holliday in for a tryout.

Ah yes, we're finally reaching that point where we start seeing players named after Shaq.

UCLA had a Shaq last year and I feel like 10% of South Carolina's team is full of Shaqs.

Give it a decade for the Lebron invasion.

I wonder if the Bears have the balls to keep playing the young guys. Frankly, Bostic has been the best LB on the team so far (though Briggs has been decent after the opener). Fuller has been the best defensive player period. Ego has been better every game, and was a stud on Sunday. Vereen has done well when he's in there...certainly better than Frey at nickel and McCray at FS, albeit in limited action.

Play Louis-Jean in the nickel with Jennings going inside. Play Vereen at FS if Conte is out. Ego should get over 1/2 the snaps at DT. Sutton should continue to play a large role. Slowly take snaps from Allen and give them to Young and/or Washington.

I know he's just strictly a returner, but I'm really surprised that he doesn't have a job. 4 return TDs in basically 2 seasons so far.

He had a job up until yesterday.

Really? Who was he with and why wasn't he returning kicks/punts?

Are the Bears making more practice squad moves this year or am I just noticing them more?

The beat writers keep talking about the bottom of the roster churn, so I assume it is actually more than usual. It certainly appears that way to me.

Jay Cutler went 1-of-5 with two interceptions on passes at least 15 yards downfield Sunday. Cutler's 23.3 completion percentage on those throws is second-lowest in the league.

What is the normal completion percentage for throws over 15 yards? I would assume somewhere around 40-45? 23.3% sounds terrible.

Injuries + Incompetence. Multiple players have been hurt at the same position, causing the Bears to have guys ready at the back of the roster and on the practice squad in case a guy can't go. We've seen this with OL (Garza, Slauson), WR (in case Marshall and Jeffery couldn't go in SF), CB (McManis), LB (McClellin).

And the bottom 3-5 players on the Bears roster have been so terrible that it's become a revolving door. I actually don't mind this type of juggling. Might as well use spots 50-53 to find a diamond in the rough. Ahmad Dixon looked like he might be a keeper on special teams until he got hurt.

I don't mind it either, but it does not speak well to Emery's ability to build a roster, 3 years into his tenure.

Yeah, especially since he got rid of some halfway decent bottom feeders like Weems, JT Thomas, Steltz, etc. and Lovie always seemed to do well with these types of guys.
