Contract details:

For starters, Lester is getting a record $30 million signing bonus, of which $15 million is due by April 1. After that, $2.5 million each is due by Dec. 31 in 2018 and 2019, and a final $10 million installment is due by Sept. 15, 2020.

Here’s Lester’s year-by-year salary breakdown:

2015: $15 million

2016: $20 million

2017: $20 million

2018: $22.5 million

2019: $22.5 million

2020: $15 million

There is a $25 million mutual option for 2021 with a $10 million buyout, and the option would become guaranteed if Lester pitches 200 or more innings in 2020 or 400 or more in 2019 and 2020 combined.

Lester also gets a hotel suite on the road, a provision that he can’t be traded without his consent and the right to 25 hours of private-plane use for him and his family annually.

Just curious. Is this an odd perk or no? Like I know Fukudome got like 8 round trips to Japan every year in his contract and see that in others, but to be specific on hours instead of round trip to wherever or that you can use it for X amount of hours? Just seem odd to me and was wondering if it was common or not for big signings.

So if we assume that 15 million up front is the rollover/Tanaka fund, that means he'll be counting 15/20/20/25/25/25/10 against payroll, not bad at all.

private jet use is typically referenced in terms of hours. You don't buy a ticket from New York to Puerto Rico, you use X hours.

Ok that makes sense. Thanks. The private plane part went right over my head.

With his family in Atlanta I'm guessing this will make it quite easy for him to fly his family to Arizona and back every spring, and then to Chicago when weather warms up/school is done, and then back again in the fall. That would leave him with an opportunity to use it for an offseason vacation as well as fly his wife up for potential playoff games.

@KerryWood

@JLester31 welcome to the Cubs! Humbled that you chose 34 and honored to be referenced with two Hall of Fame greats. #cubs

@KerryWood Thanks brother, it was an easy choice, and you have my word that I'll represent it well!

OMC's pic is broken; I am going to assume it was some kind of horrible gif of a peasant being torn apart by horses or something.

It was a celebration gif.
