Been awhile since I've posted, but a true Garvey story – he came to speak at our local minor league team’s “Hot Stove” Banquet a number of years ago. Afterwards, he hung around for pictures, autographs, etc. I approached him and I told him how he made the 11-year-old version of me cry like a little girl. He laughed and told me I ought to hear the cursing he gets when we walks down Michigan Avenue. Signed an autograph for me that reads ”Dear Jason, I’m sorry about 1984. Your BFF, Steve Garvey”

Still hate his guts, but gotta admit he was pretty decent in person.

ssr is the only one who ever threw out a good #ptr, and he's not shooting 100% from that distance either

Boxcar Tom is hilarious. Especially his adventures with pies on windowsills.

Damn right.

Poverty is no laughing matter.

Jon Lester expected to sign with Cubs, say industry insiders

According to multiple league sources, there is a growing sense among those in the industry that Lester is leaning towards signing with the Chicago Cubs. Sources have indicated to Over the Monster that the Cubs are making a hard push to sign Lester and the two sides are deeply entrenched in conversation. A final decision will likely come on Tuesday or Wednesday from Lester's camp.

The pitching market should fully awaken after Jon Lester decides where he will be playing for the foreseeable future. A report from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports stated on Monday that Lester was choosing between the Cubs and the Giants. WEEI's Rob Bradford spoke to Lester's agent, who denied the report, while further reports mentioned the Red Sox still had to meet with Lester in San Diego. Since then, there has been a holding pattern waiting for Lester's decision, with the perceived favorite and the offers from all four interested clubs the only things changing.

San Francisco assistant general manager Bobby Evans told Jim Bowden on Sirius XM that they believe that the Red Sox and Cubs are ahead of them and the Dodgers in the pursuit of Lester, saying that Lester will not be taking the top dollar on the market and is instead following his "heart strings" to his destinations. This likely means the seven-year, $175 million offer reported by Ken Rosenthal on Monday night won't matter to Lester if it's not coming from the right team. Whether this decision means a reunion with Boston and the Red Sox or the chance to reunite with Theo Epstein and Co. in Chicago, where he can attempt to be the ace of the team that finally brings a World Series to the north side, remains to be seen.According to multiple league sources, there is a growing sense among those in the industry that Lester is leaning towards signing with the Chicago Cubs. If we trade for Montero and sign Lester in one day, I wonder if we'll suddenly be "winning" this offseason.

I don't think montero has anything to do with it. They either sign an ace or they don't.

Did you miss the angst over the White Sox "winning" the offseason the other day?

Yes, but I assume that was about acquiring an ace for very little cost.

Jesse Rogers seems to think the Cubs are in the driver's seat too

Oh man here comes Lester signing with the Red Sox

Hah

Anyways he basically said this same thing on the radio just now but this was from a chat earlier:

Ok, here is my informed opinion as things are pretty tight lipped with him. I think the Cubs have been financially competitive with Lester from the get-go. Prob the leader most of the way. It looks like SF is making the best, late push. Tim Hudson, Buster Posey having an effect. The Sandoval money is now avail ans SF is going to have more money in the coming years so they can backload a deal, etc. It doesn't mean the Cubs are out but I do think a lot of rhetoric about competing ASAP and maybe even the Hammel/Montero moves is/was for Lester's benefit. If the Cubs win this it's because they outbid everyone by a decent amount, in my opinion. If it's close, I think he goes to SF. It's a pretty tense situation. Haven't seen Theo yet. No one has. Jed addressed Chi media yesterday and didn't say one word about Lester...the Cubs want this one.

Meaningless update but whatever. From the good 18 year old:

Chris Cotillo

@ChrisCotillo

Here in SD, will hear #Cubs consistently for a while, then #RedSox, then #SFGiants, then #Dodgers, then #RedSox, then #Cubs on Lester.

Cotillo's ascent to becoming AS reputable as he is, is pretty amazing honestly. The rest of the kids are nobodies, as far as I'm concerned.

And I love the fact that Theo is invisible.

I remember that 30 for 30 Short when Theo talked about sneaking out of the Winter Meetings in 2003 to go to NY to talk to ARod in person to see if he'd sign an extension before a trade. I wonder if he sneaked off to ATL to talk to Lester.

Theo's probably at the Starbucks across the street from wherever the Winter Meetings are.

Feels like he's been around awhile and he's now a freshman at UNC

Big reason #SFGiants feeling they're in "back seat" on Lester is that process is in crunch time & they don't feel they're in the loop
