So, is what I'm gathering is Peterson went all day on his son's ass?

He didn't keep count of how many times he hit him, that's for sure.

I will admit that I think a parent should have a right to use corporal punishment if they see fit. I had my share of whoopings as a child. I can count on one hand the times I've spanked mine, and I have always been careful.

When I first heard about this, I was hoping it was an over-reaction to Peterson disciplining his child in a way that maybe some just don't agree with...but when I saw the pictures on Deadspin, I got sick to my stomach.

I have worked in child care. If a child ever came to me with those injuries, I would have called protective services in a heartbeat.

Yeah, this pretty much sums up how I feel about it. That's just not okay in any way, shape or form.

Is there an NFL child abuse policy or does Goodell need to make one like his new domestic abuse policy?

Hopefully the police prevent the NFL from screwing this one up.

We're going to see more and more of this stuff come out. There's blood in the water for the media now, and they're going to dig and dig.

Not sure why people are surprised though.....these guys are paid millions to be angry and physically aggressive. We cheer them when they hit other men, then put on our shocked face when they hit people off the field.

yes, that's what I was getting at. I'm the only one who gets it. Just me. Nailed it.

Well, you're the only one who gets the dumb thing you said. One, most people aren't dropping their monocles and [expletive] because they're so shocked; they're just appalled at [expletive] they'd be appalled at whether it was done by the nerdy accountant who lives down the block or the pumped up monster who plays football. And two, just assuming that a pumped up football monster (or anyone) is automatically or likely going to be a shitty human being who beats a kid like that or tries to murder a woman's face with their fist is, yes, dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb.

There's so much wrong with the NFL. The vast majority of players are underpaid considering what the owners are making. Unlike NBA and MLB, they play on non guaranteed contracts. The majority of players will never see a pension, as its a dirty secret that averagish guys can't find jobs once they're close to vesting. Concussions and other injuries galore that will affect quite a few over the rest of their lives. I'd feel worse about those things if.....

The owners and league weren't letting so many things slide that allows guys who may not even be fit for normal society make a great deal of money. Cover ups of God only knows what.....No HGH testing until right now.

And none of this [expletive] matters. Because teams play one game a week and its easy to follow because of that. And it allows fans a reason to invite a bunch of people over and get drunk.

All this [expletive] will get swept under the rug and most will keep watching and playing fantasy and all this. The only way things change is if the government steps in and makes changes that make it a different game altogether.

Do you get itchy building these straw men? I didn't say that playing football makes men into wife beaters, I just said it shouldn't come as a surprise when they are.

I'm also referring more to the reactions of the mouth-breathing Facebook posters than anyone here

It would be fun if somebody dug into the lives of all the nfl beat writers and exposed all the arrests duis drug related stuff that came out. There are probably some factors that make an nfl player more likely to do heinous acts off the field but if you took any 1500 grouping of young adult males there's probably a bunch of bad [expletive] in there.

You don't know what a straw man is.

It's a "surprise" because most of them AREN'T wife beaters. It's a dumb attempt to inexplicably try to denigrate people who are horrified by this because...[expletive], I don't even know why you're doing that. It's a horrible thing that people are reacting strongly to, but you have an issue with that because they're not just dismissing it as "psh, whatever, of course athletes are beating their wives and kids and [expletive], ah-doy." Why would it possibly bother you that people are "shocked" or "surprised" over this?

Every time you post I need to go back and re-read what I wrote, because I feel like you're reading something completely different

So then what are you saying here? We should just expect them to hurt the people around them? People are being disingenuous or clueless when they're shocked by something like this? I just never understand the point of comments like this.

I think the sports media's coverage of this is disingenuous, yeah. Mainly the TV side, where they'll follow an update on the Ray Rice case with "TOP TEN BONE CRUSHING TACKLES OF WEEK ONE".

And while we should always be disgusted when these players abuse their children or spouses, we shouldn't be surprised by it. And NO, that doesn't mean we should expect every player to have violent tendencies, so don't even put those words in my mouth

That's a pretty ridiculous comparison. Nobody is conflating the action on a football field with something horrible like beating a child or punching a woman into unconsciousness. Shockingly, we're actually able to differentiate these clearly very different things.

Why shouldn't we be surprised by it? Again, most of them aren't doing things like this, and the numbers don't show these incidents wildly varying within the world of pro athletes vs. the public at large. It's too uncomfortably close to dismissing or even kind of excusing it in a twisted way because "oh, of course a football player would do something like that." That's simply not true, and it's a lazy conclusion and there's zero point in questioning people reacting to it with shock.

my intention was not to excuse them. sorry if it came across that way

The worst part about those pictures is that they were taken a full week after the beating. Sickening. Supposedly the kid didn't tell his mom what happened because he was afraid that Peterson would punch him in the face.
