Just by looking over the 40 man:

The most intriguing possibility is Vizcaino. I could see Ramirez and/or Rondon getting September off and putting him toward the back end.

As for others of relevance, there's also Lake, Olt, and Vitters, but there's no reason to believe that they'll do anything they didn't when last seen.

And there's any combination of Straily, Beeler, Parker, Rusin, Schlitter, and Jokisch to load up the pen.

It was posted in the Theo thread earlier this week that he mentioned Ramirez may be a starter option for next season. Agree or disagree with that plan, but stretching out Ramirez would open up a spot for Vizcaino at the back of the pen. Olt should get a chance to see if he can build any offseason trade value IMO.

Would much rather see Olt at First Base if Rizzo is gonna miss time instead of Valaika. Vizcaino and Rivero in the pen would be interesting.

I was about to post the same sentiment in the game thread. Turns out Olt has been on the DL since Aug 19

I know he's not on the 40-man but is there any chance Rafael Lopez gets called up? Wouldn't mind getting a look at him as a potential back up next year. He's put up good bb% through his career in the minors.

Someone claiming to be his brother tweeted he was promoted.

Parker was recalled today.

As far as Lopez goes, he's closer to being a player/coach than he is to being a viable backup.

I thought about Rivero, but I don't know of they'd want to deal with a 40 man move.

@CSNMooney #Cubs adding seven players: RHPs Vizcaino, Straily, Schlitter, Rosscup, OF Lake, C Lopez, LHP Jokisch.

Rosscup apparently so humiliated this weekend that he's gonna try pitching with the other hand.

Ruggiano to the 60-Day DL opens up a 2nd 40-man spot for Jokisch and Lopez.

What's the reasoning of bringing up Vizcaino but not Rivero? Did Rivero reach his innings limit, Vizcaino needing more work, or boring service time reasons?

I should have included "boring 40 man reasons" with that.

Lopez has an ISO of .044 at AAA.

Can't wait to trade him, Szczur, Edwards, and Marco Hernandez for Alex Cobb. And then hear about how terrible a trade the Cubs just made.

Surprised Olt wasn't recalled

He's been injured.

Ah. Haven't kept up much over the last week or so. That sucks for him. Thanks.

I'm guessing Rivero would require a 40 man slot and that's why he's not being called up?

Most likely.

Olt was taking grounders the other day, I guess he's just not ready. Sucks for him. I would have thought Beeler would come back up, not that it matters.

I was expecting Rivero, but I understand the need for the extra roster spot this winter. The only guys I see getting non- rostered are Rusin, Vitters, and Valaika.

Seriously sucks for Olt. This has to be his last chance to show anything for the Cubs and he is on the DL. I was hoping he could maybe reach a Matt Stairs type production. Probably hoping for too much.

if he reached matt stairs type production at the plate he'd basically be an all star

Yeah, if he reached Matt Stairs type production at 3B he'd be one of the top 3B in the league. Stairs' 162 game average was .262/.356/.477 with 23 HR and 25 2B. He also only had a career k% of 18%.
