They need to find a way to get Willie Young out there more. He was the one guy getting pressure. Ratliff was decent against the run. Those were the only noticeable guys on the D-line.

Is Allen's PFF grade out yet?

I think it usually comes out around midday, and Reddit will post shortly after. I'm eagerly anticipating them too.

Posted

The PFF quick summary is out at least:

Chicago Bears–Performances of Note

Brian De La Puente, C: +3.2

Breakdown: Playing 45 snaps in relief of the injured Garza, De La Puente was integral in the Bears’ comeback attempt. Routinely exhibiting strong work in the run game, he helped open the door for Matt Forte’s solid day. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, though, as De La Puente put up a combined +40.8 grade in three years starting for New Orleans. How he ended up in a back-up role is mind-boggling, and if he continues playing as he did yesterday, he shouldn’t stay a backup for long.

Signature Stat: Perfect in 33 snaps of pass protection.

Jay Cutler, QB: -2.0 passing

Breakdown: Not the best of days for the veteran signal-caller. He threw two picks and had one more dropped. The throw across his body to gift wrap Kyle Williams his first career interception is the cardinal sin for quarterbacks, while the other pick was the result of a miscommunication with Martellus Bennett. A replay of the dropped pick in overtime indicated it wasn’t quite as poor as it first looked — Santonio Holmes fell down coming out of his break, allowing McKelvin a clear path to the pass. In truth, it was his other throws that brought down some otherwise solid work; Buffalo recorded four additional pass deflections, often as a result of forced throws into coverage.

Signature Stat: With a clean pocket, Cutler posted a +0.4 grade. Not the case with rushers in his face, earning a -2.4 on the 11 occasions he was hurried.

Lamarr Houston, DE: +2.3

Breakdown: Signed to a big contract from Oakland this offseason, Houston perhaps made his impact felt primarily as a pass rusher. He ended the day with three hurries and a rapid hit that E.J. Manuel will surely be feeling today.

Signature Stat: Houston’s four pressures comprised 44% of the Bears’ otherwise anemic pass rush.

Definitely surprises me that Houston was graded so highly for pass rushing.

Briggs was out until 4 AM on Friday night buying shots. Fine, just don't play like crap.

Briggs is probably going to be the latest Chicago sports guy to be run out of town by a lynch mob.

This is the kind of news that never would have made the light of day if the pitchforks weren't already out.

That said, he appears done as a football player.

De La Puente looked excellent, not surprised. He should be the starter rest of season. The play at LB is phenomenally bad. And with Briggs' decline appearing more evident, not much hope in sight.

This game convinced me that Tucker should have been let go last year. Well, actually, I was convinced last year that he needed to go. This game only confirms it.

So disappointed in the LB play yesterday. I actually wasn't disappointed in the safety play. I thought the DLine did a good job of holding/slowing runners to the line of scrimmage, but there were no linebackers to finish the job.

Um...not really all that boggling. He was hurt almost the entire preseason.

I interpreted the statement as to why he had to settle for a back-up role instead of signing with a team where he would have been the starter.

Right...the Bears signed him fairly late in the FA process as a backup/possible challenge for Garza. Doesn't seem like he had many other offers, and if he did it was for roster depth on other teams.

I think he wanted the controversy surrounding his restaurant. Opened it on purpose to get in a media spat.

They weren't ok. Have to factor in that Buffalo sucks. Oh and EJ Manuel threw for a career best completion percentage. This was the same crap as last year a and the Bears had better DT and SS play than they did at any point last year.

I thought the line in particular played very well. Lance Briggs had a terrible game and, because of two plays, gave up 85 of Buffalo's 193 yards on the ground. He completely missed his assignment on each of those long run plays.

D Line still needs more pressure, but I thought they played a better game than people are recognizing.

In what way? They didn't get pressure and were more or less non-factors. Not being as awful as last year's line doesn't make them ok, let alone qualify as playing well.

Paea made a couple good plays early (literally first 2 plays), Ratliff made a couple plays in the 2nd half, Young looked really good early. Allen had 1 play where he forced Manuel out of the pocket. I thought Sutton looked good in limited snaps. But overall, that's just not good enough.

Unlike most of these instances Briggs seems incredibly eager to invite those pitch forks on himself.

Based on his age, contract, and performance yesterday, fans have a right on Monday morning to be upset with his performance.

Staying out late gives dumb fans the right to be upset about that, although they should be upset for what he's making for declining skills.

But, if he had stayed healthy, he probably would've been the starter, with Garza moved back to backup. That seemed to be the plan when he was signed.

For an older dude on the decline physically, even the staying out late aspect is bothersome. A 24 year old can get away without that affecting him physically. Briggs probably cannot handle late night boozing as well as he did 8 years ago, and even then he wasn't particularly good at it.

Meh, he's old and slow. It obviously doesn't improve his performance but he had all day Saturday to recover. He still would have been old and not earning what he was paid for regardless if he was in bed on Friday night at 9PM.

Ola was pretty good at LG too. I feel like Jordan Mills was pretty bad, but I didn't watch close enough. I think Bushrod has been pretty amazing since camp. I'd guess Slauson is more hurt than Garza, but I hope it's the opposite. No reason Garza should ever get the starting C job back from DelaPuente.

Seems to me that other than one bad beat, he was pretty good. Guess we'll see when the PFF scores come out.

I still have no idea how Briggs managed to avoid serious charges and a suspension after that incident.

They charged him with what they could. He has a smart agent.

Felt Ratliff and Houston flashed at times (didn't think Houston's play would get the top grade on the D for PFF) and Young was great when he was in. Other than them and the thre corners, no one who played extended looked good.
