Absolutely no reason to be optimistic about this team after today.

That said, it's the NFL and a lot of crazy [expletive] happens. Too much potential to throw in the towel already. If we start 1-3 or worse, then yeah I'll probably be done.

I guess I will say that the Bears should have lost to the Lions in week 1 if not for a wacky rule in 2010 and ended up hosting the NFC title game.

That said the Bears 2010 schedule was a LOT easier than the Bears juggernaut coming up. They are going to have to play a LOT better to even be 4-5 after the gauntlet ends.

You have to look at the second half of the Bears' schedule and see that 4-5 at that point is still in good shape for the playoffs.

Cutler made a lot of meaningless noise today.

Cutlers performance crushed me. I know he will have better games, and games where he will look like the best QB in the league but if there was any hope that Cutler would have a career year where he is consistently a great QB, it's gone now. I guess I shouldn't expect that kind of leap at age 31 anyways.

Every QB makes dumb throws. He made 2 in the game, and one of those happened to be severely punished.

I think you're overracting.

2? I didn't see the whole game and saw more than that. Lucky for him one of them bounced off the numbers of a defender.

Every big play for Buffalo today enhanced by Conte either being there late or not making the play once he got there.

Santonio Holmes is no Alshon Jeffrey, unfortunately.

Most disappointing on the latter point is a lack of adjustment to the play calling with Jeffery out.

I'm glad they signed Jay. There were no better options. But he is what he is: a guy who isn't a particularly smart QB and has failed to live up to his potential.

He is who he is, sure, but that's nowhere near who he is.

The one in OT and the across-the-body stupid INT while in FG range are the two that stand out. That first INT was on Bennett, and I don't immediately recall any glaringly dumb throws other than those.

ETA: if the ref called the completely obvious illegal contact late, we're probably all talking about another opening day GW drive. Not Jay's fault Jeffrey and Marshall both missed time and he was throwing to a 2010 era wideout corps.

Really, the one play that personified the day was the "jumped too early" catch by Woods, with Conte allegedly lining him up for a big hit, only to see Conte miss him almost completely.

First of all: of course I'm overreacting, I'm angry and overreacting is what I do.

Second: cutler made a LOT more than 2 bad throws. He could have easily had 5 INTs today. That said, most of his throws were very good today. It was when he was scrambling or trying to make something happen, everything broke down and he made terrible throws. Those are things you'd expect a 9 year veteran to have eliminated for the most part 3-4 years ago. Cutler will never stop making those throws. He might have 3-4 games in a row where it doesn't happen, but it will happen eventually.

It appears Cutler will go down as one of those very talented players who simply doesn't make it happen.

He either blows games like today or he gets on a really nice roll & then gets injured.

Or he has to learn another system. Or a bunch of other injuries hurt him.

It's a combination of untimely mistakes bad luck. It's not one thing. But if he was going to be one of the top producing QBs and a big winner it would have happened

Saying a QB is a "big winner" is almost as stupid as saying a starting pitcher "knows how to win".

Has there been a QB who at 31 became the player everyone thought he could be? If not, that will be the last word on Jay.

Rich Gannon? How old was Kurt Warner?

I guess Warner was a case of never getting a solid chance.

Verdict is out on Jay. He makes dumb mistakes and can never sustain good play long enough to ever win a title. Jay looked like [expletive] today aside from the first drive. Bears still rely way too much on 1 RB to handle all the carries

The point is he's putting up numbers but it's not translating.

Don't give me that weak starting pitcher comparison crap. That's not where I was going with it.

It's not translating because it's a team sport. QB stats don't translate directly to wins. That's why it's a stupid point.

How long was Gannon with Trestman before he turned his career around?

He had a ton of yards and pissed them away with 2 terrible mistakes that were 100% on him.

You're just off target on this one.

As was stated before, Moon and Warner never had the chance. I'm all for Jay living up to his potential, I just don't see the odds on his side.
