Yeah, in no way was I implying that Dawson is an inner circle HOFer or even that those awards mean he was great, but anyone who would be disappointed with a replica of Dawson's career from Soler before he even has an MLB appearance has unrealistic expectations.

On the Score whomever is on before Boers and Bernstein had a reporter on from Iowa to talk about Soler and the conversation ranged to Bryant- The reporter laughed and said Bryant is a man among children in the PCL. He said Bryant was ready to move up a long time ago. He said most guys go into a prolonged slump before they adjust (even the really good ones), but Bryant's slump was much more shallow and shorter than anyone else. He was gushing over Bryant, said most teams won't even pitch to him any more.

He said Soler is ready, but that the Cubs were keeping a close eye on him for health reasons, giving him a lot of time off. He said Soler has a great idea at the plate. He was not impressed with Soler's defense and said it was just OK.

I know a lot of "he saids", but I've been grading term papers all day and my vocabulary is shot.

I agree that if Soler has a career OBP of .323 it would be disappointing. He probably won't be Vlad either (.379 career OBP). If he finished somewhere in-between I'd be happy. I'm really just trying to manage my own expectations.

how hard is it for a "professional" tv guy to look up a dude's numbers

He probably did look it up, saw that he had 21 and 33 BBs the past 2 years, and thought "wow... this guy walks as much as Castro does."

I wouldn't put too much into Soler's defense at Iowa (and perhaps for the rest of this season in the bigs). The Cubs have been very careful with him following the hamstring issues and I'm assuming they told him to take it pretty easy out there. I mean, there's a reason they were having him play half games or every other day for a bit.

Most scouts/evaluators have always considered Soler at least solid out defensively, with a clear right field profile, and I remember people around the Cubs being impressed with his defense last Spring Training. So I just googled about that and found these quotes (http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/02/is-jorge-soler-now-the-cubs-top-prospect) from Theo and Dave McKay last February...

Theo:

“What has been really impressive, all last year and so far in camp, is how into defense and baserunning he is. He shows a really good first step in the outfield, takes good routes and has a plus arm with a lot of accuracy and carry. He also has showed a real interest in stolen bases. He was almost perfect last year (12 for 13).”

McKay:

“The way he moves, catches the ball, it’s just like a veteran guy,” McKay says. “And he does the right things. He comes up, his throws are low, hard, accurate, straight. He doesn’t overthrow.”

And notice Theo's comments about the baserunning too... Soler has attempted just one stolen base this season. We can only assume that's because of how careful they're being with him/have told him to be.

I don't think there's been one, might be Sweeney to the DL now after last night.

Logan Watkins sent down

Wasn't that for Castro?

Ack. You're right. I'm an idiot.

I haven't heard - maybe Szcur is sent along with Watkins until September?
