Auburn's defense played horribly in the first half but only allowed 60 yards in the second half. Other than that, I was pleased with the game. Jeremy Johnson is an outstanding backup qb, the running game looked a lot better the second half when Nick Marshall was a threat to keep it on the zone read. Duke Williams is going to be one and done at receiver, Melvin Ray made a terrific one handed grab. Thank god Robinson Therezie was cleared to play Friday night as he is Auburn's best at the star position (safety/lb hybrid).

The 595 yards against Arkansas was the 6th most against an SEC opponent in school history, btw.

Auburn's D playing horribly or Arkansas just having the best running game in the conference? The game turned when Auburn started putting 9 in the box and Arkansas didn't even look to stretch the field, probably because we don't have the speed to do so.

Auburn/Bama and AU/Georgia are going to be great games, but the Ole Miss and aTm games are going to be wild.

Games like this for UK is just mental masturbation for the fans. Impressive win but still don't know anything about them compared to last year.

Yeah, UK looked really good . . . but it was UT-Martin. Tennessee looked great against Austin-Peay last year and ended up 5-7, so no analysis can come from games like that.

doesnt everyone do this SEC-isnt-that-great [expletive] every year? maybe they arent, but its week 1.

People who hate the SEC do that every year whether it's accurate or not, but I think it's likely accurate this year. Unless it was just massive kinks that South Carolina and LSU need to work out.

And it could be that the SEC isn't that great for the first half of the year and then blows up in the second half. There's a massive amount of fantastic young talent in the SEC this year.

It's all dependent upon these 1st year QBs to show up. If they do the league will be right back there.

Arkansas gashed AU on the same trap play over and over in the first half. They were capitalizing on over aggressiveness of AU's DT and LB allowing two players to take themselves out of the play unblocked. I haven't rewatched the game yet and was slightly intoxicated for the live version, but AU made some adjustments at half and only allowed 2 rushing yards in the second half.

Yeah, particularly odd when half the examples were conference games, and LSU came back to win too. Especially with only the one week all we can really say is that teams won or lost(e.g. South Carolina is probably out as a title contender). Basically every Top 15 team that played somebody of consequence struggled, save for Georgia.

Gurley is a top 10 talent. I don't think he makes it past 25. There's no way 32 teams can pass up on him because they don't value RBs. You value any RB that is this talented. Reminds me of Demarco Murray, but with the feet and speed of a smaller back. Not quite McCoy or Charles type feet, but maybe a notch below that level.

my biggest issue with the SEC has never been how good they are or are they the best conference. I think it is hard to argue against that over the course of the last 10 yrs. My issue is that a team like Texas A&M will jump from 21 in the polls to 7 this week while SC will only drop a couple of spots. If lets say Nebraska beats Michigan St in a couple of weeks, Nebraska would not make a jump like that, but MSU would drop at least 10 spots. But since the new playoff system is not reliant on the polls, I don't really care any more.

It's how those games played out to me. South Carolina getting stomped by a (thought to be) very down A&M team, Alabama struggling against a WVU team coming off a 4-8 season and Auburn struggling against an Arkansas team that was 3-9 last season.

Could those latter two teams be better than they were last year and A&M not be down like people expect? Sure. But first impressions are that this wasn't a good weekend for the SEC - especially since they very well may have lost a title contender in South Carolina.

Last season there were 4 SEC teams that finished in the Top 10. After week 1, the story was that Bama's offense didn't look good against VTech, South Carolina was only okay against UNC and that Clowney didn't look the same, Auburn barely beat Wazzou, and Mizzou played an FCS team. It just seems silly to say things like 'this was a bad weekend for Conference X" when all we're comparing to is our preseason guesses. Especially since this week it had a disproportionate number of games against power conference teams.

I see what you're saying and you make a good point.

for those west of the Rockies, look up Royce Freeman on the Ducks. Thomas Tyner is noted for his speed (he is also a sprinter at UO) but Freeman is ridiculous.

I really like Freeman and think he's better than Tyner and Marshall. I was really disappointed UCLA didn't even get involved recruiting Freeman until he had committed to Oregon; after all, he went to HS much closer to LA than Eugene.

Gurley is an incredible RB but doesn't he have a history of injury problems and a bit of the fumblitis?

Fournette looked very pedestrian tonight.

Gurley was healthy his freshman year but did have a rough year with injuries last season, missing four games. But he is a running back - they're bound to get hurt.

He's fumbled 3 times in 25 games at Georgia (lost 2) - nothing too crazy.

Picked it back up in the second half and got a nice 38-7 win over a decent Utah State team. Arkansas State will be tougher next week and then we get to taking a thumping at Oklahoma.

That and Georgia back to back will be a lot of fun. . . .

Yeah, a young team changing out it's entire offensive and defensive lines with that schedule added on is absolutely brutal.

I've said that Wisconsin has a terrible 2 minute offense in previous seasons, but this made those look good.

I'm still psychologically bruised from it.

Now Gordon is hurting too.

Perfect.
