By now, we should probably stop referencing the 50 greatest players ever list that came out in 1997.

Why? Who wasn't eligible for the list that would be on it if you took it to current? LeBron? Duncan? Kobe? Reggie Miller? Who else?

Garnett. Chris Paul maybe. Definitely Durant ad Wade. Potentially even T Mac. There are a ton of people that would have made that list if it was created in 2007. Kidd Nash Dirk AI all would maybe make it now I'm sure I'm missing some guys.

Pippen was a top 5 pick, but he wasn't established as a star when he joined Jordan, which was the emphasis of my point.

is anyone this side of mj or lebron an established star before they play a single game at the professional level?

No. What's the point you're getting at? It's not like Bosh and Wade joined Lebron as rookies. It's not like Irving and Love are either.

The NBA is currently the least talented it's ever been. There are 0(!!) players from the 50 greatest players ever list playing today.

LeBron can't even crack it and he's supposed to be the king or something. What a watered down talent pool.

I just picked 1974-75 at random and found that there were 17 players from the top 50 in the league at the time. Looks like about 4-5 missed the cut because they retired after 1973-74.

James, Duncan, Garnett, Nash, Nowitzki, Bryant, Iverson, Paul, Kidd, Payton, Wade, Pierce, Miller would all at least get some consideration.

How many were still playing in 84?

What? I don't know? Who cares? My point is that your argument is bad because I could pick any year between 1947 and 1997 and find a slew of players from the list because we're talking 50 guys (whose careers probably average 12-18 years) over a 50 year span. Every year is going to be well represented.

I wasn't trying to make a point. Just asking a [expletive] question. Calm the hell down.

Without going through all the names again, I'd guess only Kareem and Malone.

Also in 74-75 weren't there 2 leagues? The guys in the league in the 80s inspired letting pros compete internationally. It inspired foreign born players to start coming to the U.S. Hell it inspired the top 50 list to be made.

I think the 80s era inspired the best basketball player to become really famous and the game took off in popularity. That really doesn't mean anything in terms talent. It's always going I get more and more talented. They didn't even shoot threes from back then and they arranged your position according to height not ability. Only really one country was producing players etc. you could say "most exciting era of basketball" but not most talented. Watch one of those games they look awful compared to today.

Maybe that's part of it. But the 84 draft is one of the best of all time, talent wise. And the league was already on the up in popularity.

Yet now that the game is more global than ever it's somehow less talented than when there were like 4 Eastern Europeans in the league?

Yep. Isn't that something?

If Arvidis Sabonis came over in his prime he would have made that list.

you got me there

wait what? are we having the same conversation? you said pippen wasn't an established star when he "joined jordan", aka, when he started playing professional basketball. my response to that was essentially that no one is, so that's not really a meaningful point to make. to that you respond with... i don't know what that is exactly
