Released by the Twins. Not great by any means but better than the Ruggianos and Sweeneys of the world. Especially since the Cubs would only have to pay the pro-rated portion of his $2,000,000 contract.

That's like drafting a 3rd rounder and sending him straight to the majors.

Kubel is 32, can't play the field much, and hasn't posted an OPS+ over 70 for 3 years.

And I don't think you've seen what Ruggiano is doing if you think that's a better option.

Ruggiano has been great. Arguably the best player on the team not named Rizzo over the last two weeks.

If you ignore Valbuena and Castro's existence, sure.

Being the 4th best position player on a last place team over a two week span isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

It kind of is when you're talking about someone with an OPS north of 940 in that span.

Okay...

After April 6th, he has a .915 OPS

I did say arguably. It's not like I compared Castro to Barney.

Why do people argue for the sake of arguing, BTW?

At this point he may have as much trade value as anyone outside of Shark and Valbuena. Team control until 2017, gets on base a ton, has some power, plays CF.

I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but clearly Rizzo, Castro, Bryant & Baez would be higher. I'd think Hammel and Arrieta, as well.

I'm assuming you meant players that may realistically be on the block, but then I'm confused by the inclusion of Valbuena. Other than the good old, "everyone is available at the right price," I can't imagine he's actually on the block.

If he has any trade value, they ought to trade him before he turns into Nate Schierholtz. Nate (at 29 years old) had better numbers for the whole season last year than Ruggiano (age 32) has this year.

False.

They're close, but false.

Yes, I meant the likely trade candidates. I wouldn't trade Luis either, but I dunno if the FO feels the same. I forgot about Hammel and agree he has more value. Not sure I'd agree re Arietta at this point, but that is possible as well.

Ruggiano: .247/.354/.395/.749 OPS+=104 with 2 HR and 8 RBI

Schierholtz: .251/.301/.470/.770 OPS+ =107 with 21 HR and 68 RBI

I'm not sure what obscure stats you're looking at, but Nate certainly had better numbers last year.

Nate has the SLG but Ruggiano has the much more important 53 point lead in OBP. I'm sure the "obscure" non-RBI stats also have something to say.

Ruggiano's WAR for the season is -0.3.

Nate's 2013 WAR 1.4.

Schierholtz' RADED(Ribbiealldayeveryday) is 8.5 over Ruggiano. He's also more efficient phonetically, as he has 9 letters and only 2 syllabols, while Ruggiano has but 8 letters, burning 4 syllabols in the process.
