Yeah, trading Russell and Barney is about getting 'something' for them, because they're non-tender candidates for 2015. Even if all you got was a PTBNL for each that's a couple million bucks that could be banked into Maeda's posting fee or towards a Cuban prospect or whatever.

how on earth is ruggiano 32? i was going to make a big post about how i like him and want him on the team one way or another next year, but that was a lot more enticing when i thought he was like 27.

he was a kind of quad-A guy on the Rays for what seemed like for-ev-er

I'm guessing those 20 aren't in order.

Someone split our farm system into two Top 10's in the MiLB forums, it was just copy and pasted

Hey that was me!

And I didn't want to spend 30 seconds looking up who did it, lol. Kudos.

Bingo.

Russell is a pretty bad middle reliever (xFIP for the last 5 years: 4.23, 4.49, 4.35, 4.77, 4.45).

Barney would have the worst wRC+ in baseball if he qualified.

The only value that they have right now is that the market places a little value on each of them due to either left-handedness or defensive ability. So you take whatever it is that you can get. Because the alternatives are getting nothing or overpaying next year.

“@RobertMurrayMLB: Don't be shocked to see the #Yankees try to add another pitcher. One name they've checked in on: #Cubs RHP Edwin Jackson.”

That's that Cotillo wannabe who was taking everyone's Tweets on Friday night and pretending he was reporting stuff.

Ken Rosenthal[/url]"]THE BIG DEAL COULD HAVE BEEN EVEN BIGGER

The Athletics did not simply target Samardzija and right-hander Jason Hammel in their discussions with the Cubs. The teams also talked about Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena, and the Athletics may pursue Valbuena again before the July 31 non-waiver deadline, sources say.

Valbuena, 28, could enter the Athletics’ mix at second base, and part of his appeal is that he is under club control through 2016. The Cubs, however, are reluctant to move him; Valbuena gives them two things they lack – left-handed hitting and on-base skills.

The Cubs’ two left-handed relievers, James Russell and Wesley Wright, are more likely to be traded; the team is drawing interest in both.

I really hope we don't move Valbuena for scraps.

Since he came to the Cubs in 2012, he's been worth 4.9 fWAR in 973 PA. (2.8 fWAR per 550 PA).

How does that 2.8 fWAR per 550 PA compare to other guys? Pretty well. It puts him right in the middle of Ryan Zimmerman (2.9), Martin Prado (2.7) and Pablo Sandoval (2.6).

You can make the argument that since Valbuena has been situationally used he should see that rate go down as he faces more lefties, but it still goes to show how useful he's been when he's been in our lineup. Giving him away for nothing would be awful.

Hypothetically, say we wanted to trade a package of prospects in the offseason including Almora, Soler, Vogelbach and Edwards.... what kind of MLB return would this group bring?

Replace Almora with Baez or Russell, and Stanton.

Or not. Don't turn this into the Shark/Hammel trade thread, please. EVERYONE wants Stanton, I get that, but this hypothetical does not include him.

A good #2-3 starter with a few years of team control remaining. Maybe a guy like Eovaldi.

Might sound like overvaluing the prospects, but I don't think I'd give up that much for Eovaldi specifically. I agree with the good 2-3 starter assessment, though.

In the ESPN MLB Rumors section the following was posted...

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, there's a good chance that Oakland may be looking to deal pitcher Drew Pomeranz in exchange for some infield help after reporting that a rehab assignment for the left-hander is fast approaching.

I'm not interested in getting rid of Valbuena without getting something of good value back. Would Pomeranz plus something else be enough? Pomeranz by himself?

He's currently on the DL after breaking his glove hand taking out his frustrations on a clubhouse chair. On one hand (no pun intended), it's a meathead thing to do that might call into question his make-up, but on the other (non-throwing) hand, it's almost impressive that, in the heat of the moment, he had the presence of mind to hit the chair with his glove hand.

Before getting hurt, he was pitching well, but he has a long history of missing time due to injury (pff, pitchers...). He's still just 25 and has been very effective throughout most of minor league career when healthy. A 5th overall pick in 2010, how much value would you place on Pomeranz this year and going forward (he's entering his prime years and is under control thru 2018) in exchange for a lefty-hitting, versatile IFer with solid defense and OBP skills?

Posted
Even with the [expletive] pitching mentality, Pomeranz is more valuable than Valbuena.

So with the A's in full on win now mode, they might bite if the Cubs add a sweetener?

We know the A's are always in need of money. What if the Cubs took back the remainder of Jim Johnson's 10 million dollar contract. They've basically written him off. Or perhaps the A's would want one of the Cubs expendable relievers...

I'm cool with a deal of that magnitude, but I'm on the fence for Pomeranz being the guy personally. A lot of different MLB chances and never better than averageish, some injury concerns, doesn't have insane stuff, etc.

Pomerantz for Valbuena and the Cubs forgo the previous deal's PTBNL?

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking.
