Blackburn pulled mid-first inning. He'd allowed a bunt single and three walks. He'd gotten a 7-day rest since his last start (10H/4IP in that one.) Tired arm, or worse?

@KevinDruley: #Cougars RHP Paul Blackburn exits w/ 2 on, 2 out in first and trailing, 2-0. Walked 3. Was fine physically, just lofty pitch count

@RobbieAaron: Easily the most comfortable @RobZastryzny_8 has looked for @daytonacubs. 4IP 2H BB 4K & most importantly, pitching w/ confidence. 0-0 B4

Two runs in the fifth, but he drops his ERA to 7.08.

Speaking of second-round picks who suck, what does Vogelbach need to do to start hitting for power? Add some uppercut to his swing, even if it means more Ks?

Does that make sense? He hit his pitch count within six batters?

Or do they have some pitch-count-per-inning thing? the rest between innings re-oxygenates the muscle? After 30 pitches per inning you're out?

I've seen Hoyer mention pitch counts per inning recently. Maybe after the high pitch count game of Shark. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they've got something implemented for it.

I have no idea if the Cubs do this but some organizations do have a max on pitches in individual innings because they don't want a pitcher to lose his mechanics when he's laboring. I know the Pirates do that; it made the prospect news when Gerrit Cole was pulled once in that situation.

@BenBadler: I love this picture: 17-year-old Eloy Jimenez making Manny Ramirez look small (via @iplbaseball_rd): http://t.co/JZjjueWS1x

Are you kidding me? He didn't look that big on mlb.com. Then again that's probably 1+ year old. Dude is a monster for sure.

Really hope Contreras' insane tear over the last month or so is a sign of positive development offensively. Strikeouts are a bit bothersome, but as long as he can do something offensively and continues developing behind the plate, he'll be an intriguing guy to keep track of. For some reason, the guy that comes into mind now is that he might be somewhat similar to Robinson Chirinos.

And there you have it:

@KevinDruley: #Cubs organizational rule is no more than 35 pitches in 1st inn. Blackburn was near threshold after 2/3 IP Wed ...

@KevinDruley: .."High-priority guys, they are what they are," mgr Mark Johnson said. "I mean, you know it. Everybody knows it. You can't be too careful."

Eloy also hit a HR in the same game: http://www.thecubreporter.com/06042014/manram-eloy-drop-bombs-papago-park

Eloy Jimenez clobbered a three-run home run, Manny Ramirez celebrated his Cub debut with a tape-measure solo HR, and Gleyber Torres belted an RBI double to account for the five Cub runs.

Ryan Sweeney has started in-game rehab down there and Rosscup pitched well again.

Glad to see Rosscup pitching, and well. 2nd outing? Not so nice for Conway and McNeill.

Yeah, Rosscup pitched on Monday (4 up, 4 down on 14 pitches) and Arizona Phil though he looked dominant then: http://www.thecubreporter.com/comment/222064#comment-222064
