During John Feinstein's CBS Sports minute, he proclaimed that Ortiz had now earned his way onto Boston's Mt. Rushmore of sports, along side Bill Russell, Bobby Orr and Tom Brady.

Anyone see something wrong there?

Not really, he's been an incredible icon for that team for the last decadish and has been a pretty damn good player. I guess if you are going only 1 guy from the towns major sports teams then Ted Williams should be considered because he was "the best."

That we're discussing those terrible pre-recorded hot takes they play on the radio?

You can only talk about this team so much.

Yes, I would say he's missing Ted Williams..

.316 .451 .645 1.096 with 29 hrs at the age of 41

.344 .482 .634 1.116 for his career over 19 seasons not to mention his missed 3 years in his prime for WWII right after near back to back triple crowns in 41 and 42

Career War of 126.6, average of 6.6 per season- Ortiz's best season ever 6.4

For almost 10,000 plate appearances he was on base almost 50% of the time

Big Papi's best season ever doesn't compare to his career averages

You can then bring up Larry Bird, Red Auerbach, Bill Belichick, Roger Clemens…

Evidently you didn't hear the sports minute, had nothing to do with winning championships.

I would guess if it had, he would have mentioned Williams in the piece, and how he didn't win one.

Bill Russell, Bobby Orr and Tom Brady are all Boston/NE sports legends who have played great and won championships. Each also represents a different sport. If you're complaining about Byrd not being there, then take issue with him picking Russell, not Ortiz. Auerbach was a coach, and again, involved in a different sport; he didn't pick any other coaches, and Ortiz plays baseball. Clemens didn't win a WS with the Red Sox. Williams didn't win a WS with the Red Sox. How do you not see the stupid formulas he's using with this insipid little piece?

Is .344 really that good in that era?

MLB average BA from '39-'60 was .260.

2013 MLB average BA was .254.

Edit: neely's post is a straw man argument in any case. Ted Williams career is far superior statistically to Ortiz's. No one is arguing that point. No one ever would.

Here's a novel question: Who gives a [expletive]?

Dumb hot sports takes are dumb? Yup. Pretty much.

I remember Red Sox fans not being as godawful to be around before they won in 2004. Maybe it's because I never see Cardinals fans, but Red Sox Nation (ugh) has surpassed their awfulness in my world. If the Cubs win a WS will our fan base be just as horrible and filled with band wagoners?

I think overall sports Boston has the worst fans in all of sports. I think if you are just going baseball it is hard to not get behind any fanbase that calls themselves the smartest and best fans on a regular basis and means it. If you don't believe Cardinal fans believe that you must come to central Illinois to see for yourself. Cardinal fans are the worst.

edit: I am mad at myself for even reading a thread that John Feinstein is part of the title. And I think we should have a Media/ESPN thread in rants.

Boston sports fans somehow act all weird and victimized yet superior to every one at the same time or maybe I just have read too much Bill Simmons in my life.
