I wrote a few really wordy posts about this topic at another board; the nuances and hypocrisy involved in every level of this story but really, this is all that needs to be said.

However I will never be comfortable with te fact a private phone call was secretly recorded and sold. That's bs and a bad precedent.

Apparently it is against the law in California and the girlfriend may face legal issues because of it. But what is the NBA supposed to do? "Sorry, players/fans/fellow owners. We know Donald Sterling is a racist POS and have proof of that but because the proof obtained by TMZ was recorded illegally we have to pretend that Sterling really loves black people."

yeah the nba isn't a courtroom, they have an owner who is killing the value of one of their most marketable teams by being a racist [expletive]. Silver doesn't have to worry about what's admissible or inadmissible

People are already saying things like RW said on my Facebook feed. Generally the same people who supported the Duck Dynasty and Chick-Fil-A goofs.

Comparing racist comments to religious beliefs is pretty foolish.

Warriors coach Mark Jackson, who called for Clippers fans to boycott Game 5, seems quite vulnerable to mob rule. Jackson is super-religious. He's previously been extorted by a stripper he kept as a mistress.

Sounds super religious to me.

Supported duck dynasty how? I don't get this. A guy has been fined 5mln due to the contents of a private phone call he had with his girlfriend. I'm some right winger because I think that's fucked up?

What was acceptable in private discourse or even public discourse 30 years ago? What's acceptable now? What's acceptable 30 years from now?

@LaurenceWHolmes

I was told today that Reinsdorf wanted to allow Silver to swing the hammer (which he did). I expect we will hear more from JR soon.

I can't believe this [expletive] [expletive] has as much power as he does in 2 of the major sports. Just die already.

Whatever he may have been fined. The point remains. You can agree with sterling a punishment and understand the NBA did what they had to do while understanding that he's being destroyed over a private conversation. This guy happens to deserve it. But the precedent is uncomfortable.

For example, for guys, think of the many many horribly sexist things that get said. In contexts where they seem appropriate or maybe even when they dot seem appropriate. It could be that in 30 years that sort of discourse is so unacceptable that you could get fired or fined for saying it or even publicly destroyed for it.

I'm absolutely not equating racism with sexism. But saying some things are widespread an tacitly acceptable now that won't be in 30 years same as sterling comments would barely raise an eyebrow 30-40 years ago.

Would religious beliefs that are prejudicial and demeaning toward a race be OK?

Not really. There aren't too many owners of pro sports teams out there, and most of them are probably smart enough to avoid having their league force them to sell.

It's idiotic to say he is being destroyed, like brain dead idiocy to suggest that is even close. He is being forced to realize ungodly profits in the sale of a team he was completely indifferent toward for decades. Only a moron would think that is destroying the man.

Not a right winger, but just kind of a spaz; as had been pointed out, the NBA isn't a state or a country, so whether or not taping the call was illegal should have zero weight when it comes to what kind of punishment they issue. The statement was made public and now he's paying the price.

I mean, it's really easy to not get in trouble for saying racist things.

You do realize that he was almost certainly aware he was being recorded, right?

The site is also reporting that sources who have heard the entire hourlong recording say Sterling absolutely knew he was being recorded. TMZ Sports has reported Stiviano has said she has more than 100 hours of recorded conversations with the 80-year-old Sterling, who is said to have used the tapes to refresh his memory because he frequently forgot what he said.

Some people have to know, considering his close ties with uproxx and sbnation, but I do not believe anybody has leaked it.

Share the worst take on the sterling situation from your facebook feed

Concerning the NBA banning Donald Sterling for life: 1) What he said was so deep South 50ish, it should be radically troubling, but not just for the reasons in question. Read on. 2) Having said that, is there a privacy issue that, as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself said in a commentary, seems troubling to the average citizen - black, white, brown, yellow or purple who might utter something about another race, sexual orientation or otherwise in a private conversation? 3)Since he has, as is documented, such a obvious racist background, how come the NAACP allowed him anywhere near a lifetime achievement award? Who slept at the wheel of that and what message does that send? 4) And ironic it is, and excuse me if I seem prudish, this grandfather type is admonishing his girlfriend about her behavior yet giving her permission to "f---" anyone she likes? Maybe that's now the ethical norm in relationships. Or maybe it's just the rich, powerful and Hollywood. To me, there's something equally disgusting in that. But hey, that's just me.

If we're to eliminate racism, let's be authentic about it in every way and on every side.

Who gives a [expletive] if it's a private conversation? The anti-logic behind that is so stupid; just because it's private doesn't mean it's a horrible thing to say/think. If it gets out, hey, you're fucked.
