Barney does seem to get the short end of the stick with how people view him. This year will go one of two ways. Either his AVG last year was a BABIP anomaly and he'll bounce back to roughly 2012 offensive levels, at which point he's a league average 2B and not worthy of disdain, or he's gone full Theriot and people know he can't make hard enough contact so his offense stays terrible and he's a platoon/backup IF at best and needs to be traded. Given the current roster construction I'd let him earn any starting assignments against RHP, but he's necessary on the roster until Baez gets here and almost certainly was a better choice for the 25 man roster than Murphy(discounting trade value/return).

Can't I be aware of his value (like in my comment earlier) and still just despise the type of player he is?

The day Darwin Barney is the worst overall player in our starting lineup, we'll be a good baseball team.

Yeah, that's far from true and 2B might even have a chance at being the worst position this year (phrasing it this way because of OF platoons) if Barney were to start all year.

Thankfully, he almost assuredly won't.

I'll bet on at least two outfield spots and catcher being worse than 2b.

I didn't say it was probable.

And the bet can't really play out because Barney isn't going to play everyday.

we're going to lose 85+ games again this year regardless, so if i'm to watch the games, i'd stylistically much prefer not to do that in a fashion where we regularly struggle to score 2 runs, and jettisoning Barney (from a starting role) helps accomplish that

also one small advantage to punting on a season is the freedom you're allowed to play guys with performance uncertainty to help determine if they might be considered future contributors in meaningful seasons

giving Barney 600 PA this year serves no productive purpose

Barney's fine. Some team in the playoff hunt is going to overvalue his defense and the Cubs are going to get a nice return at the deadline.

If not, he won't be tendered a contract next year and all your nightmares will be over.

I feel like we've heard that before.

Sounds like that would be a nightmare for Kyle.

Nah. I don't think he's that good either. I just think it'd be funny to spite the ridiculous people who think he's worse than Donnie Murphy because they arbitrarily decided that peripherals don't count anymore.

So you'd cut off your nose to spite your face. Again, dumb.

Who said he was worse than Donnie Murphy?

It's perfectly possible for the Cubs to construct the team in the upcoming years in such a way that they are both wildly successful and that Barney remains their best option for starting in the middle infield.

Possible yes, likely no. Best option, absolutely not.

Just stop.

Saying I'd rather he be gone right now than Murphy isn't the same as saying he's less valuable. The issue for me is that I don't see Barney's value increasing with his cost, making him harder to move as time goes on. I'd prefer to move him now, before that becomes more evident and no one wants to give anything for him.

If only Steve Stone had gotten that GM spot he so sweatily lusts for.

Don't get the hatred for Barney. Maybe people see him as Theriot, but he doesn't seem to be "that type of guy".

For you guys the good news is he is still being linked to a trade with the Rangers. The Rangers can't feel Murphy is even a short term answer for them.

Truth is that outside of a platoon, there isn't going to be much difference in the value of anyone who would play second until one of the young guys takes over.

Bonifacio, Barney and Valbuena all project to about the same war.

I don't like singles hitters who hit .250 in a good year and don't walk a lot

R/G is 8.3 and trending downward. You better get used to i.

Says the guy wondering why the Cubs don't have more .350 OBP guys

and I'll get used to seeing it on our opposition while we will be hitting baseballs onto the street

Yeah, if Barney could at least pull his bb% up into the 10% range, that'd be something. But being a guy that doesn't hit for average, doesn't hit for power and doesn't walk really limits his value. Some of the peripherals indicate he might have suffered from bad luck last year, but he was down in 2012 from 2011, too.

He was pretty close to neutral value last year, so even if he rebounds a bit, it's hard to justify keeping him in the regular lineup even over guys like Valbuena.

Much like Barney, Kyle takes too much abuse here.
