But Mueller, obviously aware that President Theo Epstein emphasizes a single voice in sending a message to the hitters in the wake of last year's struggles, stressed the importance of listening to his pupils' feelings on their preparation, their approach at the plate, and the level of stress they feel in a specific situation.

 

"We can't get too far into anything until you get in the (batting) cage," Mueller said. "I don't think it's fair to them to throw out what we're all about out there — me, Mike and (quality control coach) Jose Castro.

At least Mueller was a decent MLB hitter. But a hitting coach is not a shortcut around actually getting good hitters on your team.

And the quality of a major league career tells you nothing about how well that guy can coach.
