I've long had a nightmare of being in a nursing home and only having soccer on tv and no baseball. If this Clark gets a few kids into baseball then he's good in my book.

A nursing home that only showed one sport would most certainly show baseball, so you need not worry.

Today, yes. But not in the post-baseball apocalypse.

What the hell happened to all of the other sports in that guys' crazy scenario? I need to know so I can figure out if it's more anti-soccer or just anti-"foreigners."

I'm guessing they still exist but he's made to only watch soccer.

Probably because the nursing home is run by...THEM.

By "nursing home" I assume he means "death panel waiting room."

Yeah, it's more of a waiting facility, so........

It was a wacky statement, but not at all hard to understand. Recent studies show that among kids, Soccer is more popular than baseball.

Playing, watching and being a big fan of a sport can be very different things, though. I've always liked playing soccer, but find it to be almost impossibly boring to watch on TV. If you look at the things like the Harris poll, soccer is a long, long way from matching baseball in popularity among sports fans.

True. But we're talking about 40-50 years from now. The first MLS season was in 1996 and it's already the nearly equal in popularity with MLB among 12-17 year olds.

If it can get that far in 19 seasons, where's it gonna be in 50? The kids who like it now are gonna be running the country then, yada yada yada tin foil hats, etc. It was a silly statement, like I said, but it made sense to me.

baseball is boring as hell if you don't have a rooting interest.

Wow. Not at all to me. I love watching say, Felix Hernandez pitch against Yu Darvish.

Yeah, I watch random games on MLB EI all the time (maybe not two terrible teams playing) that I still find much more compelling than playoff hockey or, say, World Cup soccer. Playoff baseball trumps everything for me, even if the Cubs aren't participating. The only time I've turned a blind eye to playoff baseball was the 2005 World Series, because there was no good outcome possible.

playoff baseball was something that seemed a lot cooler to me when i was younger. now whenever i try to watch playoff baseball i'm just reminded that that it's not really better than the regular season, unless you get one of those really close games late in a series. otherwise, snoozefest. i also get the impression that baseball players tend to be a lot less passionate about winning or losing than guys in the other sports. probably because there is much less teamwork involved in baseball than any of the other major sports. baseball players just seem like stiffs most of the time. unless you break an unwritten law, then they get FIRED UP.

this is a baseball forum though, so i imagine i'm in the minority on this.

I think it's the nature of the sport, but I don't think it's that baseball players care less. Because it is a sport of precision and control, getting all amped up in baseball is counterproductive. The best performers are the ones who don't get swept up in the emotion of the moment. Baseball is a relatively cerebral sport, and that is reflected in how demonstrative players are (or aren't). But I don't believe for a second that baseball players care less than any other athletes.

I can easily buy that they'd be bigger fans of international soccer because of how much easier it is to follow now, but that they'd turn to a garbage product like MLS is just sad.

I love international soccer in terms of national teams much more than I love watching MLS, but MLS is a lot better than it was even 5 years ago at the top end. I really enjoy watching certain teams and certain matchups.

The bottom end is still pretty bad; I can't debate that.

I don't follow MLS, but I bet the bottom end isn't much worse than the NBA's bottom end.

I don't follow MLS either, but I'd assume if the top end of the sport isn't the top end of soccer in the world, then the bottom end of the NBA is probably better.
