Jets and head coach Rex Ryan have reached agreement on a multi-year extension, according to team and league sources.

Not only does he not get fired like pretty much everyone predicted prior to the season, but he gets job security.

Once they announced he was returning, an extension was inevitable. A 1-year deal would have suggested very little faith, so a 2-year makes lots of sense. If the multi-years run beyond that though, it's pretty surprising.

Making this the catch all offseason thread...

From the Titan's beat writer:

The Titans have swung and missed on many running backs over the years they had big plans for, as those guys flamed out.

At some point this offseason, the light is going to go out on Johnson’s days in Tennessee.

In my opinion, it’s not a matter of if he’s released, but when.

Yeah, I expect CJ to be gone this offseason. There's no question his productivity has dropped, but I don't think it's all (or mostly) on him. The Munchak regime used him very poorly, trying to use him as a big, feature back rather than the explosive guy you want to get out in space that he is. The offensive line under Munchak has been very poorly coached as well, meaning the holes have been tiny to (more often) non-existent.

I'd like to see what CJ could do now under a better coaching staff, but with guys like Verner and Pollard up for re-signing and money concerns already, I can't see CJ coming back.

And that Shonn Greene contract looks worse all the time. I'd love Whiz to cut Greene and bring back Jackie Battle, who was as effective as Greene at a fraction of the cost.

Titans hire UCLA DC Lou Spanos as LB coach. Seems like a good hire being a LeBeau guy. Titans are also expected to hire Ray Horton as DC. Butler was a pipe-dream, but I'm happy with Horton.

Wasn't crazy about the Whiz hire, but I'm liking the way this staff is taking shape.

Norv Turner to the Vikings as OC is a done deal.

Great move.

Yeah it's a pretty large upgrade in coaching staff to have Zimmer running the D and Norv running the O. They have talent on offense aside from the most important position. They're going to have to get that spot right long-term obviously, but I think it's possible Norv could work some magic out of Cassel for a year while having Adrian, Jennings, Patterson, Rudolph, Simpson.

Titans plan to hire Mike Mularkey and John McNulty to unspecified positions on the staff. My guess is McNulty will be QB coach and Mularkey will be TE coach.

This is shaping up to be a very good staff with a good mix of youth and experience. I want to see what the draft and FA bring, but Whiz might make me a believer pretty soon.

Browns allegedly like Johnny Football so much, they may be willing to trade up to get him lolololol

Also, their coaching search is now "let's call Josh McDaniels back and see if he's changed his mind"

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told the NFL Network that the league's competition committee could consider abolishing the PAT.

"The extra point is almost automatic," Goodell told NFL Network. "I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd [attempts]. So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play."

Goodell said one suggested proposal involved a touchdown being worth seven points instead of six, with the potential for an extra play from scrimmage that would yield an eighth point. However, "if you fail, you go back to six [points]," Goodell explained.

The commissioner did concede however there are still some roadblocks to any such change. Goodell posed the question, "Is that going to discourage people from going for two?"

There's no logic to getting rid of the PAT. What's next, let's give a TD to teams that get 1st and 1 because it's almost automatic they score a TD in 4 downs.

Well that seems like just a bit of a leap, dontcha think?

Yeah, but point is....there's no logic to removing it. I've heard "shorten the game" as a reason for no PATs, but that's stupid. There's a lot of things they could get rid of (hell kickoffs are almost more pointless at this point). Or they could simply give a team a 40-second play clock after the TD to kick the PAT. Would also cut out all the celebration as the guys would need to get off the field in a hurry.

It's pointless because there are like 4 misses per 1000 attempts

Eh, it's a boring part of the game. Removing it may not have great affect, but neither does keeping it.

Moving the kickoff location bothered me more than this would.
