Orton hate was so weird. I thought he was actually going to be a decent QB after the start of the 2008 season. He had solid numbers until he had that high ankle sprain halfway through the season (62% comp %, 10 TD - 4 INT, 1,669 passing yards through 7 games).

I said it wasn't rational.

I also hated Theriot even when he was actually good in 2008.

Other than the "stupid fan love" angle there is really no comparison between Orton and Theriot.

Boring player who I hated in 2008 despite being productive for my favorite teams.

That's a pretty weak attempt to compare them. Theriot was a huge douchebag who was completely replaceable as a mediocre second baseman who was a fixture for four straight years in the everyday lineup. Orton basically played 2 years as a Bear because he had to step in for somebody else and then was part of the trade for Cutler, the greatest transaction in Chicago sports over the past 20 years. He was just a goofy schlub who filled his role and was gone.

The fan/media obsession is a similar thing.

I don't get how people keep bringing up the fact that he was traded for Cutler as some redeeming thing as though he did it for me.

A - I already said this wasn't rational and explained pretty clearly why, so I'm not sure what you're arguing with.

B - I don't like goofy schlubs quarterbacking my team. You might even say I hate them. Sex cannons all day.

C - In 2008, Theriot was an above average shortstop. The 4 year stuff is irrelevant. I specifically referenced 2008, when he was good. I hated him then before that other stuff happened.

I've always thought Rex and Tebow looked sort of similar in some way (like in their faces)...and they kind of talked the same. Weird that someone else made that comparison even though it was based on something entirely different.

Never thought Rex was a crazy bible thumper though.

For some reason I thought Lovie was crazy religious at the time, too.

He's not?

I think he's just regular-sports-goon-religious, but I remember looking at him as some kind of Football Pope and Rex was going to be his Messiah.

I think I might have been sulley in those days.

I wanted Rex to play when he was here. But I never really wanted him on the Bears. He played at Bloomington South HS when I was at IU, and I saw him play and was like, "Ok, he's decent." Figured he would play in college, but like a MAC school or IU. When I found out he was going to Florida I felt he was undeserving. When I found out he was going to the Bears, I hoped I was wrong about him but assumed I was right.

I have a theory that if I saw you play as an amateur without much fan fare or played against you, you can't possibly be that good.

Didn't he get robbed of the Heisman because he was a sophomore? He was pretty good in college.

Oh and Rex is from Southern Indiana. Good chance he is a religious freak.

Cutler is too, no?

The only even remote reference I recall Rex making to religion was some story about how he got so excited for his Christmas presents one year as a kid that he threw up.

Only remember that because before that, I thought he might be Jewish.

I had no idea Cutler was born in Georgia. If you Google him, it says "Born: April 29, 1983 (age 31), Santa Claus, IN"

But his Wiki article actually says he was born in Columbus, GA.

Hmm. I don't know which is true. But I always heard he moved to Santa Claus as a kid/teen.

The places that list Georgia appear to indicate they moved almost immediately after he was born.
