Semi related rant. I hate it when people say GMs have smartest man in the room syndrome for "reaches". Wouldn't it be more arrogant, thinking after hours spent studying hundreds of players (and knowing other teams doing the same) you are the only team who saw a value in a guy? I mean within reason you can project, but a 100-50 jump isn't crazy. Less than a 30-10 jump for instance. Taking a reach isn't overthinking things, not listening to your draft values is overthinking.

That's a good get.

Agreed. Of the guys who've signed, he seems the most likely to make the team next season.

Another LB signed - DeDe Lattimore, LB, South Florida.

Again, if he was need obsessed, Dix or Pryor are the Rd1 pick. But he chose a CB and for now seems set at keeping him there.

Agreed on the punter, but forgivable in the grand scheme of things if he hits on his other picks at a good rate.

His perceived needs, not yours.

The point is if you treated the value right you shouldn't have to forgive punts and Hardins and mcclellins.

Emery does a lot of things really well, but I hate how he treats drafts. Missed opportunities and tunnel vision.

I want lynch just because this offense needs a shifty little [expletive] to make plays.

I know you can't have everything, but I hate going into the new year with the exact same offense. This is the NFL, attrition will happen.

This line is going to regress in a hurry. Next season emery will have to find a new need to obsess over.

I don't see the line as regressing more so than most of our roster. It has plenty of youth on it, with Emery committing plenty of resources to it since he's been here. Garza is the next out, but we hopefully have an experienced vet waiting in the wings in de la Puenta.

Bushrod could decline, or Mills or Long could fail to progress, but NFL rosters are always in a constant state of decline.

You make it sound like a bad thing that Emery has each season consistently addressed the biggest needs, and really I think has done so in a way to hedge both short term improvement and long term stability.

I do not think you can have long term success by obsessing over need in the draft, doubling and tripling up at positions of need, drafting punters, and otherwise not taking advantage of value in drafts.

Bingo. The Punter pick was just flat out stupid. With the 2 DTs my only beef with that is that they likely won't see huge playing time this year behind Ratliff and Collins/Paea

I think they will. Collins is coming off an ACL tear, Paea has had injury problems, Ratliff is old and had a severe injury two years ago, Houston woll shift inside and out and teams routinely rotate defensive linemen.

Man, this is just like college recruiting. We got a decommit but we flipped someone else's.

Wonder about the quality of hostesses.

You don't think Emery thought S was a need, a primary need at that?'

You play value right by staying true to your board, not by trading down or whatever it is you expect.

I think he thought run defense was priority one and he took three guys with run defense in mind.

At least Emery obsessively focuses on FILLING a need, gooney. Angelo obsessively focused on IGNORING a need.

Considering it was probably an upgrade in players for the Bears, there must be some pretty high quality hostesses in Chicago.

Yet going into day two, I don't think you could have found a draft expert or casual fan who said that the value present was much more aligned to S than DT. Yes, there is ultimately some question on the specific picks, which will play out on the field, but perhaps their plan was aligned to the value available, and not just need.

And I guess run D is probably a bigger need. Most of Conte's bad plays were whiffed tackles that should have been cleaned up well before him.

Phoenix>Chicago>Jacksonville...

Probably about right.

Looks like no free agency signing news on Brandon Coleman, Colt Lyerla, Marcus Roberson and Victor Hampton yet.

Walter Football has Coleman signing with the Saints.

@ZachZaidman: Phil Emery on Jordan Lynch: "I think he's a really fine runner."

Sounds about right. I'm concerned about the depth at TE. Without looking I think our #2 is Onabun

I was curious about it so I did a little research. Our number two TE last year was Eben Britton (by about six snaps over Rosario). And I was actually able to locate an article that actually referred to him as a TE hybrid.
