Sorry if this was posted before, but damn I like that a lot.

The Bears can cut Jay Cutler three seasons into his new seven-year deal with no cap hit.

Everyone that freaked out over the length of Cutler's deal can breathe now. He got no signing bonus, only guaranteed base salaries of $22.5M in 2014, $15.5M in 2015 and $16M in 2016 for a total of $54 million guaranteed. If the Bears want to move on in 2017 when Cutler turns 34 years old, they'll be able to do so with no strings attached.

Still, $22.5M this year will make it tough to rebuild the defense quickly without relying solely on the draft.

Last year we added Bushrod, Martellus, Slauson, DJ, and Anderson for 8 mill total in cap hits over their 1st year. We've got plenty of room to make impact type moves.

You should like the part where Jay Cutler is under contract a lot more than you like the part about being able to cut him.

Agreed on the risk. However,, $22.5M this year will make it tough to rebuild the defense quickly without relying solely on the draft, possibly making 1 of the 3 guaranteed years very difficult to succeed in (as a team).

It's the price of being able to get out of it early, and having no signing bonus though. For that, the Bears had to give something, and a high base salary in year one is the cost.

Those are the type of moves I think we'll see again this offseason. DJ will probably be back. The big Bushrod money will probably be spent on a DL or S. The Bennett/Slauson money will be spent on depth at CB/LB/DL. Then I think the Bears will draft DL and CB early. Also picking up another young S and LB.

Works for me. Clearly Cliff Stein has proven his worth as the salary cap guy. Thanks for the comparison to last year, that really helped. Surprised the Bushrod cap hit was so low.

Walter is in the midst of posting theirs. They've gotten skill positions done so far. They rank in order and give star ratings, along with comments for anyone that gets 2 or more. All in all, they're fairly close on rankings, in my mind and do the best job.

Bleacher Report has an oddly decent list to go from currently.

so who's our Bushrod/Bennett/Slauson this offseason?

Michael Johnson/Aqib Talib/Kerry Rhodes?

Good to see Walter got his up now. I didn't mention him because he didn't have it up yet last time I checked. I'll be looking forward to whenever he gets the defensive positions.

As smart as Emery and Trestman are, I doubt Rhodes is an option, since it appears he's been blackballed. To get him on a minimum level deal though, would be awesome. My guess is one of Johnson or Joseph, to pair with Whitner or Ihedigbo.

If they were smart wouldn't they be more likely than the rest of pick up the "blackballed" player that the rest of the league is ignoring? What would be so smart about following along with the rest of the sheep with Rhodes?

I think what he actually meant is despite how smart they are...otherwise it doesn't really make sense.

I just meant that they're very smart, just figure that they won't break NFL "code", if Rhodes is truly blackballed.

That would make me think they're less smart.

Y is Rhodes blackballed?

Because he might be gay or something.

Really? HAHAHAHA the world is dumb

I think that was the speculation because there were rumors and because he somehow didn't have a job this year after being quite good the year before.
