What type of prospect/young players of ours do you guys think would be sufficient enough to net Gardner, given his contract situation and the Yankees needs? Or what package of prospects?

Well they need a 3B assuming ARod isn't playing and they need pitching. A friend told me he saw someone floating a Gardner and prospects for Samardzija but I'm sure there's no truth to that and as much as I like Gardner, the Yankees' pitching prospects aren't interesting enough that I would do that trade.

Villanueva + Valbuena for Gardner + pitching prospect?

I really can't fathom why the Cubs would go after Gardner (and this is coming from somebody who really likes Gardner.)

Grab him in free agency after this season. Don't give up prospects or valuable pieces like Valbuena for him when we aren't going to compete this year anyways.

At some point you need to start filling holes with players that could be around for a few years. What if someone gets him before we do (in a trade plus extension)? As for the "we aren't going to compete this year anyways" argument, we might be using that more times than we want if we don't start filling holes.

i was thinking a Christian Villanueva and Darwin Barney package for Gardner would be an interesting place to start a conversation.

Better yet, certainly would rather give up Barney than Valbuena.

ABTY said Twins, Orioles, Cubs may make sense in 3 way deal involving Wieters and Shark on Twitter.

Maybe something like this?

Twins get Wieters, Russell, Schoop

Orioles get Samardzija, Vogelbach, Schierholtz, Pinto

Cubs get Meyer, Gausman, Trevor May, Felix Jorge, Adrian Marin

[expletive], I know its waaaay too big, but value seems fair.

As much as I would do that trade, the Yankees already have an all-glove, no-bat infielder in Brendan Ryan. I don't think they would take essentially the same player and a swingman for their second most valuable player last season.

I saw some quote from a scout on MLBTR saying that he thought the best the Yankees could do was a BOR guy for Gardner. I like Gardner, but he's not the second coming of DiMaggio. He's a decent hitter, versatile, and cheap for the next year. As for "their second most valuable player last season", that's not saying a lot with the injuries, suspensions, etc. that happened to the Yankees.

That's a fair point. I think they'd probably ask for Olt, and I wouldn't be opposed to Olt and Villanueva for Gardner and someone like Vidal Nuno or Chase Whitley or similarly intriguing pitcher who could be a part of the rotation this coming season.

EDIT: Also the Yankees are reportedly shopping Ichiro. I don't want him but thought it should be mentioned. Seems like trading him and cutting Wells would be the obvious choices.

Thanks

TT, I like that deal quite a bit. Hendricks definitely seems like a guy the Twins might value. But I still feel like it's unlikely to see that much talent coming back our way.

Looks like Franklin is going to be the odd man out in Seattle.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Mariners are drawing significant trade interest on their younger players, with Nick Franklin the most likely to be traded.

With the signing of Robinson Cano, the M's are apparently playing to win now as opposed to building for the future. The 22-year-old struggled in his first taste of MLB action, slashing .225/.303/.382 with 12 homers, 45 RBI and six steals in 102 games while posting a 113/42 K/BB ratio. He's immensely talented however, and should be able to net a nice return package if he's indeed dealt.

I'd love to acquire Franklin, but I honestly have no idea how much it's going to cost.

Is someone going to beat Walker, Franklin, and more for Price? I seriously doubt it myself. And after going all-in with Cano, even if its not Price, you have to think they'll try to package them together to get the biggest impact they can.

As an aside, I asked ABTY if Shark is on the M's radar and he said likely only as a plan B, after Price, Garza, Ubaldo, Tanaka, Santana, etc....

Duquette just told Bowden the O's WILL add experienced pitching before leaving the meetings.....

Edit: Also looking for a left handed hitting LFer.

If Gausman is who you really want, I think he's gettable in a Samardzjia trade. I'm not as high on him as some - of course you like the arm and the fact that he's already pitched in the major leagues, but you're paying for pure potential with Gausman - he's never dominated even in the minors. Some rank him with (or even above) the likes of Bradley - I don't see it. But he may be the most highly-ranked young arm Samardzjia could fetch you.

The more I look at Gausman, the more I want us to deal for him. I think I'd even be down for a straight up one for one with Shark, as Bowden suggested.

If we can somehow get Gausman and Rodriguez for Shark and Schierholtz, I'll be very happy.

Cubs have interest in signing free agent pitcher Johan Santana to compete for the #5 rotation spot, if the price is right. They have looked at his medical reports recently and are "generally satisfied." Unlike many teams that have expressed interest in him, the Cubs might be willing to give him a major league deal with low base and high incentives based on innings pitched.

I asked the source if this idea was being thrown out there to put pressure on Scott Baker to come to the table, but he said the interest in Santana is genuine.

Also heard that the Cubs might take a flyer on free agent OF Delmon Young. Cubs' FO likes his career stats against left-handed pitching and view him as a decent option for platooning with Nate Schierholtz, or as insurance if Nate is dealt.

His face is very kissable
