Even after arbitration raises, a potential Samardzija extension, and a possible $25 million or so a year deal for Tanaka, the Cubs are still looking like a $90-$110 million a year team for the next few years. If they get a massive TV deal that gives them a [expletive] load of money to play around with on top of that, it makes the risk of signing Tanaka that much less of a bother. And during this time when they have millions more to spend, they'll have guys like Baez, Bryant, Almora, Soler, Alcantara, and Edwards on the team for LEAGUE MINIMUM.

I honestly don't care how much they spend on Tanaka. I just want him in a Cubs uniform

Seems like the current plan is to acquire/draft tons of volume/upside pitching prospects (TNSTAAPP) while you cheaply fill the OF with platoons and fill infield with mega prospects and strategically strike on younger/undervalued pitchers even if it means overpaying because you'll be paying league minimum for your infield and a few million per outfielder. Then when your position players hit arb, you'll bear the fruits of your pitching prospects and be able to pay them. This inessence is the wave theory: pay market/above for the right FAs while one group comes up cheaply and then when the cheap become more expensive, have another group of players backfill...the wave isn't a one time thing, it waxes and wanes. At worst through each of these cycles you open a few year window to compete and at best you continually sustain success.

Beware reports suggesting Cubs have high offer on table for Tanaka or that he's favoring Cubs. Multiple sources say Cubs remain long shots.

I had unfollowed GDub but now that I'm seeing RT's by CCO, I blocked him all together.

He was the first one to have the Cubs trading for Matt Garza.

Reminder that Gordon's shtick is to dump cold water all over any remotely positive Cubs report

That was a totally different FO, fwiw

(and I'm not saying he doesn't have sources...just that that information is largely irrelevant)

I'm not comfortable piling on the guy who says what we don't want to hear. I hope he's wrong, certainly.

It unnerves me a little that

a) Cubs having the high bid

b) Cubs being long shots

c) Tanaka preferring certain cities, with Chicago not being one of them

all work together.

I just don't like him and he's a troll (like in the more literal sense I mean) so I have no issue piling on him

The fact that he's always saying stuff I don't like is just icing. He definitely has an axe to grind.

Yeah, it's understandable. We all want Tanaka and don't want to hear anything bad.

But the fact has always been the same: The Yanks and Dodgers both want him, and I just don't see one of those two not getting him. All the other reports, good or bad, mean nothing to me. We ain't getting him. (But I hope I'm wrong).

I want Tanaka on this team too in a bad way, but I do fear that we are building this guy up to be Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson rolled into one.

koufax and gibson rolled into one would be due 55 million a season. i suspect we'll get tanaka for south of that.

Masahiro Tanaka come to Chicago my friend. Cubs have the best uniforms. Think about that when you make your decision. It's important.

Let's hope so or else poor Tom Ricketts will really be poor Tom Ricketts.

For those who care, ABTY says Yanks would have to go about $38M into the luxury tax to match the Cubs offer and that the Dodgers aren't going to match, but rely on the quality of the team and the huge Japanese-American community in LA.

Ty Youngfelt @TyYoungfelt

As of a week ago, Yankees have lowest bid, D'Backs, Dodgers within +/- 8M of each other...hearing Yanks adjusted/matched-Cubs +20-30 over

So to clarify, is he saying Yanks have surpassed the Cubs offer by 20-30M?

EDIT:

Ty Youngfelt @TyYoungfelt

To clarify- Yankees matched D'Backs offer of 115, not Cubs offer...

lol whut

But Wittenmyer's tweet doesn't just question whether the Cubs are the favorites. The tweet questions whether the Cubs are the highest bidders. So Wittenmyer is saying that A is not true in your scenario.

I'm dreading this. All the false reports of Rakuten deciding to post him or not, I'm wondering how many false "he signed with (blank)" we get, before we get the truth.

I can confirm Tanaka's Wife's agency has reached out to Shawn Ryan regarding his Twitter offer.
