  1. But Wittenmyer's tweet doesn't just question whether the Cubs are the favorites. The tweet questions whether the Cubs are the highest bidders. So Wittenmyer is saying that A is not true in your scenario.

I think davell nailed it - a solely quantity approach (assuming we mean sub-$400,000 bonuses) just doesn't work because there aren't enough of that type of player and you may end up losing out on guys you like who end up a smidge more expensive. You go cheaper and you enter White Sox territory of just being cheap. Well the recent interview Theo Epstein did with Kaplan seems to confirm this line of thinking. When asked about international amateurs he said that they were looking for impact and not organizational depth. The focus on biggest impact would seem to indicate that they are going to go for big ticket items in international market again.
  3. I initially thought Dempster would turn down the qualifying offer easily, but now thinking about the fact that teams will lose their highest non-protected pick to sign Dempster makes it really unlikely that a team will offer that multiyear deal that I thought Dempster would get.
