Remember re Tanaka: it is possible to want a guy badly, to make him a killer offer, to do everything possible to get him ... & not get him.

Still, better than the blind bid system for Darvish.

Everyone knows this. People need to stop acting like anybody who matters doesn't know this.

FWIW, though this might just be the kiss of death, amirite davell?

Yep, boys and girls. #Cubs are in this thing for reals. Good confirmation.

A thousand Stanley Nickels says he'll pat himself on the back when Rosenthal posts a blurb that still mentions the Cubs being involved.

I feel stupid for thinking this might not be pointlessly dragged out to the last possible minute.

My guess is we hear an answer sometime late tomorrow evening.

News and rumors have been all over the place these last few days with everyone becoming the team to beat and everyone else declaring they will not be outbid. Now there is word coming out that Tanaka is deciding between the Yankees and Cubs. There were some rumors that he preferred the East or West coasts, leaving out Chicago, but now people think the Cubs offered a contract that is hard to walk away from.

Nothing really new here, but w/e...

Aren't you glad you didn't cancel your date?

Not really. That's $50 I ain't getting back.

Holy [expletive].

Did you spring for Olive Garden or something?

Never set expectations that high on the first date.

Industry sources believe the Cubs will outbid the field on money and years. None of the clubs know other teams bids.

Levine says no one knows each others bids.

I'd say that all depends on how his representation wants to handle the negotiation.

Obviously, the information isn't public. But I don't see how this would differ from any other FA.

Without knowing HOW deals are negotiated, I've always pictured Boras going back and forth to each team, trying to squeeze every last cent out of everyone, pitting them against each other.

If this was handled as a sealed bid, everyone give me your best, up front type of deal-I think it'd help us.

I just don't understand the Yankees argument. They have an old and flawed team. They have a shitty minor league system. They have money. And they are in NY. The Cubs have more to offer.

I don't think it is true. If the Cubs do everything possible to get him they will. It's all about the money. If it wasn't he wouldn't have left Japan.

Perception vs Reality, no one ever wants to call the Yankees flawed publicly. That's like saying Jeter is an average defensive SS.

That's some flawed logic.

It's obviously about some combination of all the factors, of which money is almost certainly the most heavily weighted one. If money is anywhere near equal, other factors could easily come into play. I'm not sure how you could declare otherwise with any sort of certainty.

The Yankees have had the better teams recently and New York is a more world-famous city than Chicago. There's an argument.
