OK, so only the top team gets to negotiate with Tanaka, but pays average of top 3 bids. Again, not likely to be us.....But I think I like our chances better than having Tanaka choose between 3 teams.

Wait, wait, wait... so if the top 3 bids are $60 million, $40 million, and $20 million, the people who bid $60 million only have to pay $40 million? It's not an issue of Tanaka getting to choose between the top 3 bidders who he wants to negotiate with? Is this new information?

This one says it's average of top 2, but we may find out officially as soon as tomorrow.

The two averages seems more realistic. If it's three that seems like it could be somewhat unfair if the first place team only ends up paying what the 2nd place team bid. That's a real slap in the face.

"Hey, we know you bid $40 million, and it was a valiant effort, but the people who bid $60 million? We're only gonna charge them what YOU wanted to pay in the first place."

It's not as if the teams are bidding without knowledge of the rules. If it's the average of the top 3, then teams will take that into account when deciding on the amount they bid.

I know, that doesn't mean it can't happen. A system should be in place so that can't happen. A two team average would prevent it, obviously.

It’s something that we’ve talked about. I think every team is waiting on the exact rules and getting a feel for formulating a plan. So we haven’t gone that far, but we’ve scouted him and we’re paying attention to what happens to the bidding process. And we plan to be part of it.

I'll also be paying attention to the bidding process, so I plan to be a part of it, too

One club official questioned why the Cubs would sink more than $100 million into one player when the team has so many needs and doubted Tanaka will land in Chicago.

why sink $100 million into one player when you can sink $4 million into four players and call it an offseason?

Sounds like an outrageous new paradigm.

Oh.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Owner: "Serious reservations" among clubs about posting process. Possible no agreement is reached, which means no Tanaka this off-season.

There were rumblings that the owners originally wanted a "set" fee and that any team that was willing to pay it would then be able to negotiate with the player. One, it'd give the player himself a higher contract, but it'd also take away from the Japanese club and what they were getting. On top of that, it's not like every cent from the "set" fee plus the increased player contract would have went to the player, I'm sure owners would have saved a bit themselves.

If this is what the owners were hoping for, to get this very minor change-I could definitely see them holding out, if they're just tired of sending that much money over to a team, which in Tanaka's case, is 2-3 years away from being a legit FA and could leave with the team getting nothing for him.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mlb-withdrawing-proposal-japan-bidding-182330373--mlb.html

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Major League Baseball is withdrawing its proposal for a new bidding system with Japan, making it uncertain whether prized pitcher Masahiro Tanaka will be on the market this offseason.

MLB Chief Operating Officer Rob Manfred said Japanese officials had not acted quickly enough on MLB's proposal for a new agreement and that a new proposal will be forwarded.

Manfred said MLB owners were concerned that bidding under the old system had raised prices to a level many clubs could not afford.

Tanaka, a 25-year-old right-hander, went a 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA during the regular season for the Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Pacific League.

Without an agreement, Japanese players would not be able to sign with MLB until they had nine years of service time and could become free agents.

So who knows if they'll actually agree on a deal or not.

I bet they still agree to a deal. This just feels like posturing. Japanese teams need this money, they'll fold to whatever MLB demands.

Although if it were cancelled, that's the dream scenario for #poortomricketts. Then they can leak that they were all ready to make an insane bid on Tanaka but couldn't and don't want to spend that money on anything else.

I hope it IS postponed. I seriously thought our chances were damn near zero. Let the Dodgers and Yankees spend big on their rotations now, maybe next year we'd have a realistic shot at him.

Plus one less front line starter available hopefully means Shark's value goes slightly up.

That's exactly what will happen. That being said, I will be pretty taken aback if this doesn't get worked out.

FWIw, though I thought they were done trying to figure out a new posting system?

David Waldstein of the New York Times reports that MLB and Japan baseball executives are expected to agree upon a new posting system.

The two sides have narrowed the potential negotiation systems down to three, one of which will be agreed upon. It's unclear at the moment what those potential options are, but it surely looks like this whole posting mess will be cleared up soon. Once that happens, and it's settled where Masahiro Tanaka will play, look for the rest of the starting pitching market to begin taking shape.
