obviously he's a reliever which puts a pretty hard cap on what he can give you, but i'm surprised rosscup isn't higher on people's prospect lists. i mean, we'd all be furious if he was traded for some other organization's szczur/ha, right?

People here are starting to say he'll start 2014 on the MLB team, no?

yes, but i don't think i saw him on many top 30 lists.

He's firmly entrenched in mine, but in the 20s.

To me, I've got Szczur in the 17-22 range right now and Rosscup outside my top 30. I think a 4th OFer is slightly more valuable than a LOOGY.

If Szczur is our 4th OF, something has gone horribly wrong.

I think the Reed Johnson comps on Szczur could be fairly accurate. I don't think things would be horribly wrong if we wound up with a Reed type as a 4th OFer, but saying that-I figure Szczur has his major league career elsewhere.

i guess i think a really good loogy is much more valuable than a blah 4th OF.

i think a loogy of rosscup's caliber (assuming his minor league numbers translate) is a lot harder to find than a 4th OF of szczur's potential caliber.

Rosscup shouldn't be relegated to LOOGY status already.

Szczur is 24 years old and hitting .730 OPS and slugging .374 in AA. Maybe he could be a very end of roster pinch runner, late inning defense, and "Oh well, I guess he's slightly better than a pitcher" last man left on the bench pinch hitter, but that is a Jose Macias caliber bat for a 4th OF. Yep, considering Andreoli and Ha have just as much of a chance as Szczur of being a 4th OF.

Reed Johnson comps? Sczur is 24 with a SLG way under .400 at AA. When Reed Johnson was a 24 year old in the Southern League he hit .314/.383/.451. Sczur may still have a major league career but he's more of a 25th guy on the roster than a 4th OF. I think a quality reliever is more valuable than a guy with Szczur's profile.

Yeah, I was gonna say that struck me as odd. He could be a pretty great BP piece.

You guys got me curious about Rosscup, so I looked up his splits. His FIP is 0.77 against lefties with a K% of 47, and a 2.97 FIP against righties with a K% of 32.

Drastic split, but it's not like he can't handle righties.

The Reed Johnson comps are from McLeod, not me. Rosscup could be more than a LOOGY and if he is, then he's likely got more value than a 4th OFer, which Szczur may or may not be himself. At any rate, I'll rethink my positioning on Rosscup if he pitches well in AAA and/or the AFL.

not trying to be a dick, and i realize we're just whining over something stupid like prospect rankings, but i'll rethink my positioning on szczur if he hits well ever, anywhere.

Can someone tell me what separates Rosscup from Jeff Beliveau? The velo is about the same, unless I'm mistaken. Beliveau was a stud in AA at 24, Rosscup at 25, with slightly less control. I don't know that Rosscup is an absolute "must add" to the 40 man, until he pitches well in the AFL.

Setting aside that I always thought Beliveau should've been given a shot, here's a comparison of those two seasons:

Player FIP K/9 BB/9 HR/9
Beliveau 3.11 10.9 2.5 1.1
Rosscup 2.07 13.7 3.9 0.4

i had Rosscup @25 & Szczur @16 two months ago, but i guess in seeing the relative ease with which you can just grab an OF like Sweeney, Bogusevic, Gillespie off the street who won't make a complete ass of themselves in sheltered ABs, the appeal of a 5th OF-type has diminished some for me since then

i'd probably have those two mostly reversed in a revision
