First preseason game is tonight at the UC against Intraconference rivals Detroit, who we last saw on the same ice shaking hands with the Hawks in defeat. Kind of sucks but this one won't be televised, and probably not broadcast on the radio due to tonight's exciting Cubs-Brewers game.

I was in Vancouver during preseason hockey time one year and was shocked how into it those crazy canucks get about it.

I, for one, could not care less about something like preseason hockey.

Preseason anything blows except maybe the 3rd NFL preseason game. But for pretty much every sport I get excited about the first game for like 10 minutes and then flip to something else.

It still boggles my mind that the Hawks are back on the ice. It really feels like a month ago when the Hawks won the Cup. We pretty much just went through the shortest offseason any Big 4 team could ever go through with the postseason extended to the last few days of June, and starting up again in early September.

I might turn it on for a couple min when the Blackhawks are on here the next couple days. But it's nothing like I am during NFL training camp or anything.

I can probably watch all or most of a spring training game, and I've definitely paid to go to a few. I will watch a series or two of football. But the difference between October hockey and playoff hockey is so drastic that I can't even imagine watching a second of preseason.

Playoff hockey is much better than February regular season hockey. I cant imagine ever watching preseason hockey.

I've never made it through even 1 inning of a spring training game. At least pre season hockey has some action.

Hawks were #1 in ESPN's future power rankings (insider article). Blurb on the Hawks:

There was a time when Chicago GM Stan Bowman was regarded simply as a general manager who inherited a great situation in Chicago, and benefited greatly from the work of former GM Dale Tallon. And maybe that was true for the first Stanley Cup. But if you dismantle a champion because of the salary cap, and then rebuild a more sustainable team, winning another championship in the process, reputations are changed.

Bowman and the Blackhawks' front office received the only perfect 10 in any category among voters and Bowman's work post-2010 is a big reason for it. The Chicago front office has since branched into its own family tree, with former Blackhawks assistant GMs running teams in Winnipeg and Montreal. The Blackhawks core is still young, and under the direction of Mark Kelley, the team has drafted well, a necessity in the cap era.

The one concern? Salary cap flexibility. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane have annual cap hits of $6.3 million that expire following the 2014-15 season. Unless they both take a discount, that number will jump considerably. The healthy raise for Corey Crawford along with long-term deals for Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa, Duncan Keith and Niklas Hjalmarsson could make navigating the salary cap an issue down the road in Chicago. But it's nothing Bowman hasn't deftly handled in the past.

For those not checking the NHL season thread we are trying to start up an NSBB fantasy hockey league. We have 4, need at least 4 more. Let me know if you're interested.

We're gonna have to shut this down unless we get a last-minute influx of teams.

We can try it again next year and try to get it going a bit earlier.
