If they had some idea that it would cost this to retain Crawford beyond this year, I think I'd rather have Emery on Emery's deal than Crawford on Crawford's deal.

But I'm crazy like that.

that's a bad idea

Gooney, seriously, stop. You couldn't be more wrong on the availability of a goalie in the system.

They also have Crawford, and would still have Crawford with or without this contract.

Yes. Indeed. And the extension takes effect after this coming season. I'm talking about where they will be after this season when Crawford would have gone UFA, as well as goalies in the prospect pipeline. We agree that the contract is bad. I've offered a theory as to why they may have made that offer. Drew ably demonstrated that there would likely be FA options out there, or potential for a trade. Personally, I'm still not sure why they rushed.

It was one of the many radical rule changes tested at the NHL research and development camp this week in Toronto, and to my surprise, several general managers seemed to at least be entertaining the idea of 3-on-3 play in overtime as a way to end more games before a shootout.

the current blackhawks team would absolutely own 3 on 3

Kane-Toews-Keith then after a minute or two go something like Hossa - Sharp - Leddy and that would be some seriously dangerous open-ice play

Is 3-on-3 really more pure than a shootout?

Yes.

I think so as well. Guys are skating around, trying to put the puck in the net while the opposition is trying to prevent that and move it in the other direction. I think I'd like to see them throw on another minute or so of OT as well.

Got my Gamecenter renewal notice. $150 for the year. I suppose that's reasonable.

I canceled my renewal yesterday. Couldn't justify the price considering half the games last year were blacked out due to the games being on NBC sports network. Ill deal with the illegal streams, though worse quality and not always reliable, for now

It's definitely more pure, but I'm not enthusiastically in favor of this either.

how is it more pure? a penalty shot is at least something that happens. i can't remember ever seeing a 3-on-3

it obviously means nothing, but the toews/kane responses to the extension stuff didn't exactly put me at ease, especially kane's.

Let's say Kane decided he wanted to move on. Where would he have the chance to a) win the cup basically every season, b) play in a city as good as Chicago and c) play in a system that maximizes his talent?

I'm not saying there isn't one but that's what he'd be leaving if he took more money. Of course if they win the cup this year he may just want to get paid and not care about anything else

A Buffalo native and Sabres fan I know is convinced that Kane will end his career playing there. Whether that is 10 years from now or 2, is up for debate.

The way things stand now, these guys have been underpaid. I'm guessing they expect to be paid like top 5-10 guys in the league. They see how Pittsburgh fit in Crosby and Malkin. They see that other guys are getting paid. They've won 2 Cups and it is entirely reasonable for them to play hardball in negotiations. They are already Chicago legends. There's little to be gained by playing nice.

Kane has won 2 Cups already. Not saying that winning isn't a primary motivation, but he won't have that lingering "i might never win a Cup" feeling in the back of his head when deciding to play for a team that isn't as set up to win immediately. I could easily see him wanting to play for Buffalo and trying to bring a cup to his hometown. That's the only place I could really see him leaving Chicago for at this point but who knows in 2 years.

I would not be surprised if he had aspirations to play in LA or NY. Whole new crop of females.

Man, would it ever suck to lose him in the prime years of his career.

I'd say that NY or LA was a lot more likely than wanting to play in Buffalo for any length of time.

re: them getting paid. They both get the same $8-9 million per and I think (hope) they take it bacause they know that if they ask for and get more it will reduce the quality of the pieces around them. They aren't so far removed from having the likes of Pisani and O'Donnell around not to realize that they can only ask for so much.

Tazer:

When faced with questions about that potential cap issue after handing lucrative extensions to Corey Crawford, Niklas Hjalmarsson, and Bryan Bickell, Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman firmly stated that Kane and Toews “will be here forever.”

That message resonated with the team’s captain.

“It meant a lot to hear that,” Toews said, according to CSN Chicago. He later added, “Right now, it would be tough to find a reason to play somewhere else. There’s no place better to play hockey.”
