This has no practical impact because the guys behind him are just as awful, but I'm glad we won't have to hear about how every absurd insertion into a key situation is justified because Marmol might build up trade value anymore.

Best Marmol memories?

I know at the end of 2007, he had a 2 inning, 5K performance against the Brewers to hold them off for the division (I think he actually pitched the 6th and 7th and got the win). Crazy numbers in 2007.

The way Marmol sucks is way more maddening though. And his goofy Neifi ass doesn't help.

Ricketts will make up the money he eats on Marmol and Stewart contracts with the new Jumbotron.

I know this jagbag is trying to be witty, but when will people realize what a sunk cost is?

One year, I think it was 2008, Marmol was still very much in contention for the NL strikeout lead well into June, which of course was totally absurd for a reliever. I remember being flabbergasted by that.

Probably my favorite Marmol memory, just because I was there for it, was him getting himself into trouble in the 2009 game against STL which Soriano won with an 8th-inning homer, then getting out of it on a double play. At the time we still thought he was invincible enough to get out of any of his own situations.

I believe that makes Alfonso Soriano the longest-tenured Cub — at least until he's traded and the title passes to Samardzija.

It was time to go with Marmol, but at least he had 4 good-to-awesome seasons. He doesn't deserved to be only remembered among the pile of bums.

City of Chicago could save time and $$ by folding Stanley Cup & Marmol DFA parades into one event. #cubs #blackhawks

I don't think there was any specific moment, it was just the general feeling of calm during the 7th inning of any close game in 2007.

Funny how that became the completely opposite from 2011-2013

Not surprised at all. Sad that they couldn't get something for Marmol but he's been terrible and it's time to move on. Gregg has been good enough to (hopefully) net something of value at the deadline. As for Stewart, good riddance.

When he struck out Chris Duncan on a pitch that hit Duncan in the leg.

Reading the article that he's gone 10 minutes ago.

That's just sad. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

No, bliss is no longer having to watch Marmol pitch. He certainly had some good years (2007-2010) but he has run his course in Chicago. I won't miss him and if that means I'm "ignorant" then so be it.

The Cubs employed one of the best relievers in baseball with the most ridiculous slider ever, and the only thing that you enjoy about it is him being released? That's just ignoring anything that happened more than a year ago (and the textbook definition of ignorant).

I don't have the numbers in front of me but for a season or two, Marmol was as difficult to get a hit off of as any pitcher in baseball history.

Not only was he one of the most dominant relievers, but he was flat out enjoyable to watch whether he was logging a 1-2-3 inning or walking the bases loaded and then making the next 3 guys look like 5 year olds haplessly flailing at a piñata.

I can't remember an exact Marmol moment that I loved most. I guess that can be the case with shut down relief pitchers. Just like with my poker hands, I remember their failures best.

I do remember how awesome it was having a reliever that dominant and not having him be named our closer in 2007 and 2008. Instead we got to mostly use him in higher leverage spots, which was sweet.

A crappy one that comes to mind was the first time I remember him seeming human, aside from the 07 playoffs, in Harden's debut, when [expletive] Theriot threw that ball into the OF and we blew a 5 run 9th inning lead. We won that game and he continued to be awesome after that, so no big deal.
