Same basic team makeup as 04 (04 non-pitcher team OPS was .811), except the 08 team won the division by 7 games and were 10 game clear of the playoffs when they started coasting. 04 missed the playoffs by 4 games.

Don't forget that their pythag was like 95 or 96 wins.

Every time I think about that Nomar trade, I think about the September 2004 Cubs:

C Michael Barrett - .287/.337/.489/.826

1B Derrek Lee - .278/.356/.504/.860

2B Todd Walker - .274/.352/.468/.820

SS Nomar Garciaparra - .297/.364/.455/.819

3B Aramis Ramirez - .318/.373/.578/.951

LF Moises Alou - .293/.361/.557/.919

CF Corey Patterson - .266/.320/.452/.771

RF Sammy Sosa - .253/.332/.517/.849

Bench

OF Todd Hollandsworth - .318/.392/.547/.939

OF Ben Grieve - .250/.316/.563/.878

IF Mark Grudzielanek - .297/.364/.455/.819

IF Neifi Perez - .371/.400/.548/.948 (!)

Rotation of Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Maddux, Clement, each of the 5 with a 110 or better ERA+, Bullpen with Dempster, Mercker, Hawkins, Remlinger, Rusch, Wuertz and Farnsworth, all of which were better than average (aside from maybe Farnsworth).

HOW DID THIS TEAM NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS, DUSTY?!

The offense was so streaky that year, and it seemed to go dry the last week of the season. Other than that, I have no [expletive] clue. We were up 1.5 games with 9 games left, playing 2 against the hapless Mets, 4 against the hapless Reds, and 3 against the Braves who were resting for the playoffs.

Against the Mets it was LaTroy Hawkins blowing it, then the offense not showing up that sunday. Against the Reds, the Cubs just stopped scoring and lost 3 of 4 despite great pitching performances. In one game Sosa came up with the bases loaded and missed a grand slam by inches, in another Prior struck out 16 guys and Hawkins blew the save. Also Austin Kearns.

Also the Astros finished by winning 31 of their last 39 games and finished 3 games ahead of us.

For the life of me, I could have sworn it was around 6pm when I heard the news. I do remember it being on a Saturday, my wife and I were on our way back home from the Stl Zoo. I didn't have a smart phone yet, so as soon as we got in the car, I turned on 720am (TONS of static) and no reports about anything. It's quite possible they were just recapping the Nomar deal. Once I heard it, I just started honking the horn like crazy and screaming. The people working thought I was nuts.

i was at my parents' house and i was watching the cubs game and checking espn.com all day hoping for nomar news. when the deadline passed and they said it wasn't happening, i was super sad and left the tv on and walked out of the room. i was hanging out in the kitchen a while later and i looked over at the tv and i saw nomar's face and the headline and ran around the house jumping up and down.

also, thinking about this has made me think about the nomar cartoon thing i made way back then. if i remember correctly, i initially tried tried to make a recap of the day's events using legos. it was a complete failure.

I remember hanging out at someones house and there happened to be another Cubs fan there who said "So what do you think about the Cubs getting Nomar?" and I said "What the hell are you talking about?" at which point I was filled in. This was pretty much my reaction:

I was at D'arcy's Pint in Springfield and pretty much did the same thing.

I had just moved to Pittsburgh about 2 weeks before the trade deadline and I was at the laundromat. I saw it on the bottom line on whatever channel was on there. I couldn't believe it because all indications were it was a no go before I left the house. So, I waited til it scrolled around again to make sure I wasn't seeing things. I had to wait like an hour before my clothes were done drying and I could go home and get on my dialup internet and find out the trade details.

You still had dialup in 2004?

Yeah. It was still the most popular way to access internet from home.

i was at navy pier for a concert with a friend from out of town, and she wanted to get there a few hours early and look around. we soon realized this was a bad idea and went to look for air conditioning, and i found out about the trade in a gift shop. i remember it playing on all the TVs.

I was doing what I'm always doing on deadline day: sitting in front of a computer refreshing multiple pages, with ESPNews on the TV. It wasn't long after Gammons had just been on assuring viewers that Nomar wasn't going anywhere.

Those were the days. I remember all the talk being of the Cubs getting. Orlando Cabrera, which I was excited about due to our existing SS situation at the time.

Yeah, I moved to Orlando in 2005 and got access to high speed, but at my parent's place in northeast Ohio they couldn't get any highspeed internet access until 2008. And they had to fight to get it then since ATT's range ended like half a mile from their house, and ATT had no interest in expanding it.
