FWIW basically all of Twitter is calling this a very team-friendly deal for us, including Keith Law. So we've got that going for us.

I sincerely hope that one of baseball's top analysts is OK with locking up a 23 year old who could very well be one of baseball's premier sluggers for years to come for under 6MM per year.

We have our two cornerstones locked up into their 30s for under 13 mil year. Combined. We're currently paying Carlos Marmol nearly 10 mil.

Was Rizzo that hard-up for cash now?

Brett brought up a great point saying that over the 7 years, the cubs are likely getting a discount, but probably not as large as you would think (I think he guesstimated about $49m). Where the deal's perceived bargain is the 2 club options at $14.5m, so while a great deal for the cubs, the overall package still sets Rizzo up considering he still only has 680 ML PA.

Even if I was pretty sure I was going to make more by waiting, it would be pretty hard to pass up $41M guaranteed.

$101 million for the next 7 years for Castro and Rizzo. Incredible.

My buddy is a Cards fan. His reaction to this statement:

"That's like one Pujols at bat!"

Yea it's not like he's a FA either. His ability to earn is limited by arbitration, which makes the figure harder to wrap our minds around since we're so used to basing figures off FA deals.

Plus a guy who had lymphoma probably realizes more than most how quickly life can change, so you take that guaranteed cash even if its a 20% or whatever discount.

Rob Neyer on Rizzo contract

Synopsis: Cubs locked up Rizzo for same time frame Reds locked up Votto, except Rizzo is 7 years younger and they're getting him for 1/3 the price.

And 1/3 as good

 Rizzo is on pace for 4.8 wins this season, so let me know when Votto puts up that 14WAR season.

Yeah...no.

And even if he were just 1/3 as good as Votto this season (not even close), Votto's locked up to his age 39 season, at which point he might just be 1/3 as good as Rizzo at 31.

Which the article explicitly says.

Which means you didn't even try to read it.

But it's not just a discount, the team options are huge, and puts him in a spot where he will negotiate his next contract after he has already started to decline. $17m/year was the standard for upper echelon 1B a decade ago, and $20m+ has become the norm now. If the Cubs own options at $14.5m for each of his age 30 and 31 seasons, then he's going to be looking for that FU money contract starting with his age 32 season. The way things are going in baseball, he'll get it from somebody, but damn, I would have thought those options would be much more expensive than $14.5m.

Wittenmyer lukewarm on the deal, saying that big market teams shouldn't have to do this and you only do this because resources are limited.

When asked if it's a good deal, he says, "Who knows? We'll see if he's the kind of player this deal suggests he should be." - Hilarious since he could be less than he is now and be completely worth that deal.

Not posting for any other reason than to point out what a moron GDubCub is.

Chicago has got to have some of the laziest baseball journalists in the country, Bruce Miles excluded.
