To be fair, it's not showing the whole AB, as the pitcher winds up he comes out of that ridiculous crouch to be in a much more natural looking stance, though his pre-swing stance is still very open. It's basically his timing mechanism.

 

It's not a timing mechanism, it is a ritualistic superstitious behavior.

Mauer backhanded the rebound without looking.

 

Very Cool. I thought it was just the fans ducking in fear, and I didnt get the significance because that happens every game on foul balls despite the net.

Holy balls you're right. I watched it probably twenty times trying to figure it out.

 

He looked, he just had his head turned right and his glove around the left...

 

Still, damn impressive.
