This manager search has been really interesting - just reading the interviews and reading different articles about bench coaches and the changing dynamics in the dugout. I guess I've come around to the belief that a manager that literally manages the staff and the team while administering the front office philosophy is the best choice. But a balanced team may be another way to look at a good solution.

I think I've looked at it the opposite honestly. Other than the idea that Girardi coming could have possibly sped the timetable up a bit, I've had no interest at all. Couldn't even muster getting too pissed with the Red Sox crap. Theo and Co are smart, I don't see any manager as a guy thats worth 5 wins or anything like that(unless you're maybe going Maddon to Dusty or something). Whoever they bring in, I'll be fine with. And its kept me from getting invested in the search.

Apparently the Mariners are hiring Lloyd McClendon (????) That would leave us as the only opening.

That means we can take whoever we want that is still available that wants to manage us.

well, I was more saying that the process was interesting and reading how the manager position has/is changing. The actual names are pretty meaningless.

What do you find so interesting? This same thing has happened many times before. This is boring as hell and largely meaningless.

Barry Rozner is filling in on the radio this morning for Mike Mulligan on the Score, and man has he been insufferable about this Cubs manager search this morning.

And they're taking every meatball anti-Theo call.

http://www.gammonsdaily.com/cubs-to-announce-new-manager-thursday-rich-renteria-considered-favorite/

Sometime Thursday the Cubs will announce their new manager. Jed Hoyer, Theo Epstein and the baseball staff will meet for the final time Wednesday, finalize the decision and make their decision public tomorrow. In the final hours, it seems that Padres bench coach Rich Renteria is the favorite, with his experience in development and managing in Mexico, an advantage for a team that in the next two years will be bringing a number of highly-touted players—many of them from Latin America—up to Wrigley Field.

In the end, the Cubs were not, as suggested, beaten to the punch by the Tigers on Brad Ausmus; while Epstein and Ausmus have been close for years, the Cubs job requires developmental experience. They were denied the opportunity to interview Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo under an agreement made when Epstein left Boston that he could not take Red Sox employees with him for two years. Boston ownership has held firm, so it is expected that Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington will take care of Lovullo in some manner.

Whenever their old media friends from Boston report something Cubs related, I wonder if it's a strategic leak of some kind (maybe to put pressure on Boston not to screw with Lovullo). Probably not, though. Seems too late for that.

I'd love to know what the hell Cherington could do for Lovullo to make up for not letting him interview for a managerial position in Chicago that he probably had a pretty good chance of getting.

I hate Rozner way worse than I hate Kaplan. WAY worse.

Even Wittenmyer thought Rozner's take on the situation (that this is all a big embarrassing mess and makes the FO look bad because Renteria has been the guy all along) was irrational.

That's exactly what Rozner was saying. The sadness in Rozner's voice about the Cubs not getting Ausmus nearly made me laugh out loud. He spent the whole show lamenting the entire mess, took callers hating on Theo, and then at the end threw in "But I think Theo will ultimate find success here."

Apologize and take him to dinner? Maybe some jewelry?

Oh wait, no, give him a lot of money. That's it, that's always it.

He thinks Renteria was the buy all along but that it's a mess? I don't get it. If their top choice is still there where's the mess?

This. Kaplan is an idiot. but he's a weirdly frustrating idiot in that he every shows flashes like he could get it, but ultimately he doesn't or seems to just choose not to, plus, cheesy at is, he seems to actually get excited and is positive about things sometimes. Rozner is just flat out dumb and his every opinion is ugly and negative and playing to the worst case scenario just to get people riled up. Everything is a disaster to him, and his irrational hatred for all things Aramis Ramirez is enough to condemn alone.

I hate everything associated with the Red Sox.

That bitch Luccino has a stick up his ass for Theo, that he would prevent one of his employees from obtaining a job he's busted his ass for for over a decade, started at the btm to poss get to this point.

Lovullo was with Tor when it went down, I could understand if it was a lateral move. The main victim is Lovullo (and me,).

Day of mourning please.

[expletive] Boston.

Kaplan is a jock sniffer. Rozner is a curmudgeon. But Kaplan is ubiquitous when following the Cubs while Rozner must be actively sought out.

That's the thing; Rozner is just SO wrong and negative that even though I don't hear from him as often I still hate him more. Kaplan is just a dork. And he seems oblivious to how much he looks like a gigantic penis, which is hilarious.

Kaplan would be the Richie Incognito of his workplace if he wasn't such a pud and occasionally surrounded by men twice his size.

Kaplan's a meatball, but occasionally gets an opinion right and I think he genuinely wants the Cubs to succeed, despite his persistent pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Rozner is a racist jerkass who warms himself at night snuggling with his Greg Maddux hairdoll.

And like N&G, his over the top Ramirez hate alone makes him punchable.

Kaplan has the exact same over the top hate of Ramirez. Don't ever forget that.

Oh, I haven't. Don't worry. The only difference is that Kaplan would sometimes give ARam credit for the good things he did, whereas Rozner never liked him and took any and every opportunity to take shots at the only good 3B we've had since the late 60's. Kaplan indulged the meatball hate of the jogging and bat-flipping. Rozner incited it.

Make no mistake: this is a choice between bad and marginally less bad. But there is a clear gap in bad between the two, and if I could pick only one to launch via rocket into the sun, it would be Rozner.
