Am not much of a Girardi fan but I'd be in favor of hiring him if for no other reason that, coming from the Yankees, I simply can't imagine he'd take the Cubs job without solid assurances from the front office that our financial situation is much less dour and constrained than it's been made out to be.

That's exactly what we said when Epstein was hired. No *way* he'd be hired just to gut the payroll and run an expansion-style rebuild.

I could've made this post for you; I was so sure it was coming.

Kyle being rote and predictable? Inconceivable.

glad to see the yankees said no. hopefully we move on.

Not sure why the Cubs would do that if Girardi is the guy they want.

It's only what, 28 days to wait maximum? Less if Girardi takes a deal from NY sooner.

The #Royals have added Dale Sveum to the coaching staff for 2014. Sveum managed the Cubs for the last two seasons.

Are the Cubs still on the hook for his 2014 salary? I assume so

Hey, I'm thinking the Ricketts DID make promises that ultimately they couldn't keep; I do still think that Theo would not have come here if he knew the money issue was going to be what it's seemingly turned out to be. If the farm doesn't start seriously paying off in the next two seasons I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Epstein walk when his deal is done.

I don't think he would have come here if he would have known the realities.

Yeah, he's blowing this joint if things don't start paying off in the next couple years.

I left out a pretty critical "not;" I meant to say that I didn't Think Theo would have come here if he had any inkling of the financial mess the Ricketts were in for.

Theo May not have been aware of the financial mess but he would've known about an impending mega tv deal - so that softens the blow somewhat. This is yet another road block and extends the time frame to rebuild (on top of the new cba)

The whole dual fronts talking point turned out to be phony. I bet Theo wishes he would have stayed with Boston. Something has to give at some point. You can't have one of the top profitable teams and spend like a small to mid market team. Never thought I would pine for the Sam Zell/Jim Hendry days, but at least they were attempting to put together a major league team to compete.

What mega TV deal? Even after the WGN is up they're still locked in with CSN until 2019. Yeah, they're going to get more money in the meantime, but it'll be nowhere near what other teams have been getting.

this comparison still doesn't make sense. we already know theo was interested in building a team from scratch with it's own minor league talent, and a 100 million dollar payroll is plenty of money to operate that way. the idea is that he gets to be the one to build it all. that's the draw for him. what would be the draw for a manager to come here without good talent on the major league roster? girardi would have no say over how the team is built, all that would matter to him would be the pieces he is given.

I'm still having trouble believing that all of these brilliant, successful businessmen (Ricketts, Epstein, etc.) with their army of lawyers and financial advisors didn't have a clue about where they might be financially at this point.

Ok. What do you choose to believe?

I love this tweet by Gammons:

Had the Cubs approached Brad Ausmus, which hasn't happened, he would have been interested in the managerial job. For the record

Really? Someone who wants to be a manager but isn't a manager would have been interested in a managing job with a major-market team?

There was a report that he wasn't interested.

I wouldn't go anywhere near that far.

They were putting together a major league team to sell.

Sure, but I'm just referring to wanting to go back to Zell/Hendry. No, thank you.

This part of the Ricketts era sucks and we shouldn't have to endure it, but I'm still pretty certain it's going to end up in a glorious place (awesome renovated Wrigley, lots of revenue from that and TV, loads of young talent, etc.)
