It'd be OK. Pretty sure Greg wanted a soft schedule, which is why he's an assistant to the GM or something like that. He's the guy I'd really want out of this equation and if he's not willing to be a pitching coach at the major league level or has philosophies too far removed from what DJ believes in, it's not a good fit anyway. Mike took himself out of the running once already and his only tie to the Cubs is his brother. Just seems like an unknown to me, which we're trying to avoid.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal

As #Cubs’ chances for Girardi seemingly diminish, here is one name to keep in mind: #Padres assistant GM and former #Dbacks mgr A.J. Hinch.

I'm not seeing his interpretation that chances are "seemingly diminishing"

It's because Cashman made those statements about wanting to keep Girardi, and someone said that the Yankees would reject permission for the Cubs to formally talk with Girardi. I really have no idea why they'd do the latter though, it seems the slight benefit of forcing the Cubs to wait out the clock is more than outweighed by the risk of irritating Girardi if he really does want to survey his options.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 9m

Hinch is on #Cub list of possibilities, according to sources. More viable candidate from #Padres than Brad Ausmus.

Hinch, #Dbacks’ former farm director, has experience working with young players and as MLB mgr. Had little chance to succeed as mgr in AZ.

Source: Yanks unlikely to give Girardi permission to talk with Cubs unless negotiations breakdown between Yanks and Girardi's agent

So, basically if Girardi wants it.

Should be interesting to see what goes down tomorrow.

Definitely makes sense, comez from the Byrnes background. Curious as far as what happened with AZ.

Never even remember him being the Diamondback's manager until I looked him up. Has a degree from Stanford in Psychology. Looks like he would fit right in with the Theo and Jed. Meatheads and Sullivan would hate it.

Seems like all the guys mentioned have degrees from pretty highly regarded schools.

Did anyone catch what Law had to say about this on Waddle and Silvy about an hour ago?

It will be.

Here's a link to the entire article posted by Marchand, if anyone hasn't found it yet.

Sounds like the Yanks will offer Girardi a deal to stay in NY, and Cashman believes he'll take it.

I think i remember being sold on Mike Maddux before the Sveum hiring. Or maybe it was the opposite.

Who is DJ?

Derek (?) Johnson, the pitching guru from Vanderbilt the Cubs brought in.

Brad Ausmus is going to be one hell of a big league manager. The guy's brilliant, made the majors while going to Dartmouth and had a fantastic GPA. Spent years in the game as a catcher, always respected to his knowledge of the game. He also has a fantastic reputation as a person, leader and role model and has always been active in the community. He's unproven as a teacher obviously, but if Theo plans on keeping the next manager through the point where the Cubs become good, Brad Ausmus is on my short list with Girardi.

JD raves about him too.

Dartmouth, Northwestern, Stanford, plus all of the wonks in the FO. We may not win many games, but we'll lead the league in IQ.

It would be a group that'd eventually win, so long as they don't succumb to groupthink ala Pearl Harbor.

I like B2B's bold stance that having smart people involved with your front office is a bad thing.

They're not baseball men.
