RT @CSNMooney: Cubs absolutely have to hit on prospects, because there's no "Plan B" at Wrigley: http://t.co/w5WV1kSiBc

Sell the [expletive] team Ricketts, you piece of [expletive]. :banghead:

As for "there's no plan B", we've known that all along. Our prospects have to make it to the ML level or show enough at the ml level to become trade bait. As for Ricketts selling the team, lets put a call out to V. Siviano and see what she could do.

I hope I'm still alive the next time the Cubs make the playoffs. With each passing day I'm less inclined to believe that will happen.

I'm hoping for a WS appearance, but I don't think I'll make it. Most of the posters here are young enough to see the Cubs make the playoffs, but that's not too hard with 2 wild card teams.

You just wait, we'll expand to 8 playoff teams per league and the Cubs will sneak in with an 83-79 record at some point

Let's just hope "at some point" is soon enough for us old-timers.

No, by time that happens we'll go 108-54 and get swept in the first round by a 78-84 Cardinals team #onlymyteams

Just kidding, the Cardinals will never win less than 90 games again.

it sickens me that, say, next year we could have baez and bryant blow up...and then almora and soler come up and contribute and suddenly we win like 94 games or something...and then even if all that amazing stuff happens, we still have to deal with the [expletive] playoffs. just like we did in 08 and 07.

I don't think we can talk playoffs until we find some pitching. Some of our pitching prospects are interesting, but by no means a sure thing. At some point we are going to have to find some very solid pitchers through FA or trade.

I would not be sickened if we had to deal with the playoffs next year.

I would be ok with a 2004 style collapse. Hell I would be fine with a 2009 style 'hover around .500 most of the year, go on a small run and tie for first for a day then go on a long losing streak and finish barely above .500" season right now.

that was totally not anywhere near the point of my post. the viability of it matters not.

it's that [expletive] the playoffs.

i'm just saying that i hate the fact that no matter how good we make the team we have just a 1 in whatever crapshoot (depends how you get in) chance to win the world series.

you hope to get enough tries to make it happen but it still comes down to that bs.

obviously, it's nice if you sneak in with like an 86 win team or something.

Well, that still wouldn't bother me. I'd rather rely on the odds of winning playoff series once I'm in them than rely on the odds that a bunch of prospects all hit their marks at the right time to make this team competitive.

All I'm saying is that no matter how good this team ultimately gets, there are a million things that can keep us from actually winning a championship and it only gets worse the more teams that are in the playoffs. That kinda sucks. It's only further cemented in my brain by what happened in 08 (and to a lesser extent, 07).

Put together the best team in basketball and I'd feel pretty confident in its chances to win multiple championships. Put together a consistent 90-100 win juggernaut in baseball and you might win none in 10 years. Or you might be the Braves and get 1 in like 15 or whatever that was.

No, the team who happens to be hotter at the right time wins.

If you mean in any given series, then kinda. A 30-40% chance of getting upset is a pretty big number.

If you mean by winning it all, then no, not really. The Cards and Red Sox both had the best records in their league last year. The last team that happened(top records meeting in the WS) was 1999.

The key, it really is important to field the best team possible.

Easier to make the playoffs in the first place.

Easier to withstand setbacks along the way.

Doesn't leave you desperate to make costly additions when you are barely on the cusp.

Gives you the advantage if any individual playoff matchup.

This goes back to my hatred of MacPhail's (maybe a Lynch quote, but pretty sure it was MacPhail) goal to "competing within the division", which to me was way too low of a goal. You have to expect setbacks, and falling short of competing within your division more likely than not means you will fall way short of competing with the rest of the league.

No, the team who happens to be hotter at the right time wins.

Even "hotter" isn't a thing. It's just the team that happens to win more games in a short series.

And then the one who happens to do that to the team that happened to do that to some other team. And then again.

And that's only slightly exaggerated. Actual quality of the team is somewhat weighted, but not that much.

it's funny that this conversation just happened with CubinNY because I just stumbled onto this one when I was looking for the Laura Prepon/Mila Kunis stuff.

You were here before me, weren't you? I may have joined before you, but I lurked for a few years here and posted elsewhere. I was scared of saber metrics.

Tell that to the 2006 Cards. Still gives me heartburn.
