Castro doesn't make over $10m for 4 more years. If he rebounds to a 3-4 win shortstop, he goes back to being one of the best values in baseball. And he's 23 for another 2 months. I need more than minor league stats and 200 MLB PAs from Bryant and Baez to get rid of him.

And let's keep Javy and KB's K and BB rates in mind before bringing up Starlin's offensive approach. They basically match what Starlin did, with more strikeouts.

And dingers!

I admit I did fail to include that 'minor' detail.

Honest question though (and not meant as a rebuttal). How much more valuable is a 28% K rate/30 HR profile vs 15% K rate/15 HR profile?

I guess that depends on what you mean by "establish." I don't think you have to have a 3-win season already in the books from those guys to warrant a Castro trade.

There's little to nothing that Alcantara could do this year (within reason) that would make me deem a rebounded Castro expendable.

The other two guys, given their status, skill sets, and pedigree? Sure.

I'm ready to deem Castro expendable right now, but apparently we want to wait for his stats to rebound and assume the market price will reflect it when they do.

Not that it's the be-all, but ZIPS has Castro with a .319 wOBA this year and Alcantara .314.

That's fine, but there's two different discussions here. I can see the argument for him being expendable right now. But if he actually does rebound in 2014 it is a different story.

I think we're all jumping the gun a bit to even think one rebounded season of Castro gets us an interesting package.

I think that Castro would bring us an interesting package right now. Interesting being the operative word there obviously. I think we could get a package of (from our own system as an equivalent) of Pierce Johnson, Jeimer Candelario, and Paul Blackburn.

No, that's not enough to make me consider trading him, but if he puts up a 3-4 WAR type year again? I could see that package turning into the equivalent of one elite prospect(top 25), and a pair of top 100's to go along with it. Again, as I mentioned earlier, I'd want that package to have THAT value, just including at least one guy you'd be able to put into your rotation or lineup immediately.

I'm betting they find him expendable on anything short of a "ZOMG, back on the future HOF track!!!!" season. Not a mere rebound.

I think the odds of Starlin Castro being a Cub at this time next year are less than 50/50.

Not only would it not shock me if he's traded, it wouldn't bother me either. Especially if he bounces back and the kids are ready to go. Castro would likely be moved for pitching and, if his value is restored, would probably bring back something good.

OH BOY I HOPE WE HAVE A 24 YEAR OLD 4WAR SS TO TRADE AWAY SOON

Sweet, me too. Glad we're on the same page.

THEN, imagine what we could get for the guys we got for castro. [drool]

think about it

you get a 4 war ss

trade him for 2 prospects that end up being 4 war each, that's 8 war

trade them each for 4 war guys and now you got 16 war

that's cooking with gas my friends

At some point we have to address the top of our rotation. I just don't see the top tier guys coming free except maybe Price. At some we will have to make a choice as to who will be dealt, probably from our glut of middle infielders. It's not likely we can get a top guy without using our prospects.

On the other hand we could be a contender with what should be a solid rotation (when the kids are ready), and then find a rental guy to get us over.

It's just a crap shoot to see if it's a "Garza-Dempster" type or a "Greinke-C.C" type from a few years back.

Full game from that brief period when Corey Patterson and Mark Prior were actually our star players and everything was coming together:

oh hell yes

i promise not to liveblog this but 75 seconds in and the sight of prior makes me want to throw up.

"...he's put up some remarkable numbers...especially when you consider he's only 22-years old!"

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAARF.

And then the weird shot of him showing of his pitches while wearing short-shorts.
