FWIW, I can't remember the last time Marlin was right about much, if that makes anybody feel better.

Kyle or davell might be able to help here.

I'm not super-good at keeping track, but he's seemed a little more out the outside since the new regime took over. I still think he's a local beat writer.

It always seems like he has the same stuff as Bruce Levine (which would definitely fit the profile of a guy who had better info with the old regime)...

Marlin's claim to fame is getting the Hayden Simpson right hours before the draft when pretty much no one expected it. He's been right on several other stuff as well, I can't remember them off the top of my head though.

Yeah, the speculation was(still is maybe?) that he's tight with Wilken, isn't it?

It exists. When I checked, it had one follower. Julie DiCaro.

Yep, just found it.

That's what some have said, don't know if it's true or not though.

There used to be a couple other media types following. Disappointing.

Obstructed had a post about the 2002 BP top 100 prospects. The Cubs were loaded with Prior #2 and Big Z #80. The 2002 team had Sosa, Alou, Kid K, A-Gonz and the Farns. They went all in and got A-Ram for Hill #48 and Lee for Choi #40.

The difference is we are not in a position to go all in.

ah . . . how many of those Boston beards . . .

2014 is a bust, 2015 is when you'll see . . . these monkey cluckers know what they're doing.

Back already?

But yeah. The situation with the 2002 class actually turned into some pretty good things. Hopefully this one turns out even better.

Money is not an issue at the moment. The baseball ops budget has been in place since the end of the season with only minor tweaks expected...

Shark apparently believes he'll be dealt; Barney has said the same...

I asked for some clarification as to what exactly the first part means.

If they trade Barney and Samardzija, we better be getting Tanaka and Cano if they want to get the payroll back to $100m.

That's not a terrible idea (well, Cano in itself is a separate discussion)...if you can use Samardzija to get a really good pitching prospect and maybe another piece, and then use the money saved to help complete a Tanaka bid along with a big signing. Just spitballing along with what you said.

Not sure what the point of a Barney trade would be unless they can get something good for him, which I have a hard time seeing.

Doing some back of the napkin, without Samardzija and Barney, you could fill out the roster for about or maybe even under $60m.

Or add a couple prospects and have like $40M to spend, which isn't so bad, I guess.

The only way it makes sense to need to save those marginal dollars (while still intending to spend) is if they need to do the whole up front huge posting fee on Tanaka thing while abiding by the purchase agreement restrictions. They'd still need to allocate more than $100M to player payroll to get Tanaka done, though.

I can 't see Barney bringing anything back in a trade by himself. Hell, MLBTR lists him as a non tender candidate. Seriously, if he were a FA right now, what kind of contract can you see a team giving him? That should help in figuring out his value to a good degree.

As much as I want Tanaka, I honestly don't see us having the upfront money to get it done. Keeping payroll static is one thing(and I suspect that) but a 50-60 mill one time fee with our debt structure including not having a single day of showing a loss? Just don 't see it. Not from a team that had to budget Carlos Pena's one year, 10 mill deal over 3 fiscal years.

They Royals' second base situation is atrocious and haven't they been enamored with his defense for awhile? They have some intriguing arms.

I don't think it's a good sign if they trade Shark unless they get a MLB ready pitcher who they are confident can start 20+, with around a 3.00 ERA.

If we trade Shark, I'd guess a big time young pitcher is part of the return. It certainly limits the market though.....

Baltimore-Bundy or Gausman, plus more

Boston- Webster, Rubby, Barnes, Ranaudo(2 of this group and more)

Toronto- Sanchez and one of Drabek or Hutchison

KC- Ventura or Zimmer and Almonte or Duffy

Cleveland- Bauer and much more

Oakland- Gray or Parker and more

Texas- honestly don 't see them trading for another SP from us, even if they've got the pieces.

Seattle- Walker(don 't see them trading him)

Washington- Cole and Giolito

Mets-Syndergaard and Montero(very unlikely)

Phils- Biddle and much more

Pirates- Taillon and more

Dodgers- Lee and Urias

Giants- Crick and one of Escobar, Blach, Stratton, or Blackburn and more

Diamondbacks- Bradley, or one of Skaggs or Delgado and much more

Rockies- Butler and much more

Pads- Wisler and Kelly, plus more.

There's around 20 pitchers total in baseball that you can feel confident will start 20+ with an era around 3.00.

And Shark isn't even one of them
