Part of the reason for the average SLG is the way below average BA, though. They're above average in ISO.

Using strictly my recollections (no stats), they seem very prone to fouling off two-strike pitches before eventually whiffing. Seems like they swing at a lot of bad pitches to keep the AB alive instead of taking balls and going deep in the count. Could be a reason for the # of pitches per AB being high but the OBP being down. Good at contact but not good at putting ball in play.

Kerry Wood discovered a man's body floating in Chicago's Belmont Harbor while the former Chicago Cubs pitcher was paddle boarding on Monday morning, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Wood immediately called 911 to report the body, the Tribune reported, citing a police report.

The Tribune reported the victim as a 40-year-old man who was wearing an identification tag on his left wrist that indicated he had been reported missing by a nursing home after being released by a hospital on June 19.

Wood retired from the Cubs in May 2012 after spending parts of 13 seasons in Chicago. He still lives in Chicago and worked for the Cubs as an instructor during spring training.

Attempts to reach Wood were not immediately successful.

The Cubs still have a chance to finish as a top 5 NL offense in runs scored. In 6th, and less than .05 runs per game behind 5th (if the games were equalized, they'd be 3 or 4 runs behind over the course of the full season). This is definitely a different offensive age.

its not impossible to think the roofline is spoiled and be ok with the lights. I'd rather the Cubs play day baseball games but I understand why they don't.

Since when was any aesthetic aspect of Wrigley ever considered "sleek"?

Its not a [expletive] rocket ship. Its a 99 year old baseball park.

Really interesting article on the evolution of Samardzija's stuff, with a lot of quotes from him. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jeff-samardzija-on-the-evolution-of-his-pitches/

But it’s the splitter that’s Samardzija’s bread-and-butter pitch. He laughed when I asked him how hard it was to throw the pitch for strikes: “It’s pretty hard… if you’re throwing that splitter for a strike, it’s probably going to be pretty flat and more like a straight changeup type pitch.” More often, The Shark is hunting. If the batter is swinging, he’ll go for the diving, falling splitfinger and the whiff.

Yes, if you read between the lines , you’ll see it: Jeff Samardzija has two splitfingers. Or more.

Normally it has some arm-side fade. But it cuts, too, like a slider. “You’re not sure where it’s going to end up, and if you’re not sure where it’s going to go, then the hitter is guessing, too,” Samardzija said about the splitter’s beauty. Depending on the day, though (“If it’s giving you fits, you’ll probably just stick with one and live with it.”), there are things he can do to alter the movement. He doesn’t really change his grip, but he does change how he throws the pitch.

“It’s just pressure on your fingers and thumb location,” he told me. “If you’re heavy on your index finger, it’s going to go one way; if you’re heavy on your middle finger, it’s going to go the other way. Deeper in your hands to make it go slower, with more of a deep bite. Don’t have much control over those. Those are the ones you start down the middle and let it do its thing.”

What kind of weirdo gives a damn over something like a roofline? Goofy fucks on Twitter, that's who.

@ESPNStatsInfo: David Wright is 16th player to participate in #HRDerby in home stadium. Of previous 15, only Ryan Sandberg has won (Wrigley Field in 1990)

What an embarrassment

Was just looking at box scores from the weekend, Cody Ransom is 37!?! I would probably not have guessed within 5 years of that if you asked me his age.

I was flummoxed when I saw his age as well. Cody's are never supposed to be older than like 12.
