Berkman fesses up that there's more to his Wrigley dislike:

“Not only have I not performed well, I almost came as close to dying here as I’ve ever been anywhere in my life,” he said. “So all of those experience combined don’t have a real friendly feeling.”

I love that quote. He's a country boy right? He had to have been just as close to lightning at some point in his life.

I cannot manage to find any video of that night at all. Too bad.

EDIT: Well, not video of him running off the field in fear anyway.

I was at that game and will never forget it for several reasons. The lightning and reported tornado west of the stadium. Also, my father-in-law was at a suite for work, so he got me from the seats into the suite. I drank at least 6 to 8 beers during the delay and laughed at all of the people who were running through the rain. At one point, someone left the suite to go to the bathroom. When he opened the door to come back in, the rain/wind was coming so hard, it virtually flooded the suite because it was very hard to close the door with the wind. Everyone else left because they were on a bus trip and had a designated leaving time. I stayed with 1 other guy who lived within walking distance and kept drinking. Rain stopped, they resumed the game, I chugged 1 more beer and walked home.

I know. Great story.

I get so insanely nostalgic whenever I see anything about that 08 season. Even just seeing that douchebag Edmonds hanging out in the dugout. Easily my favorite baseball season (my favorite moments were definitely the 03 playoffs, but the 03 season itself overall was not as fun for me). I must've gone to 20 games.

MAKE ME FEEL LIKE THAT AGAIN, CUBS... EXCEPT THIS TIME BETTER.

seriously asking...when do you see this happening?

I am very worried it's closer to 2016, not 2015 even.

It just seems like everything we need to happen is going slower than expected.

After Arizona fall and spring training I thought we had Lake, Baez and Soler pretty close to be ready. With guys like Sappelt and Rizzo struggling, Jackson not showing much change, Vitters and Lake not playing much it seems further away than ever. I knew this season was going to rough, but I think the struggling prospects is much worse. I know it's early but for future prospects it probably couldn't be a worse start.

I guess I'll just hang onto Samardzija, and the hope that Schierholtz and Wood continue their play.

2016 is possible, but they'd probably have to mess up pretty bad to not be any good by 2015. They should get an impact player this summer, who could be contributing by the end of 2014, and the way things look to be going this season, they may get another one next year. They should have been able to field a decent team by now, and will be able to field a decent one next season, if they try. There's no reason why 2015 can't at least contend. They probably won't be 2008 good for a while longer though.

It was. My friends that remained in the seats said it was terrifying being on the concourse with thousands of others hearing the tornado sirens in a 95 year old building. Unbelievable that they actually finished that game.

Question...is there a means to measure if some guys hit the ball hard and thus, have a high BABIP?

The common way to do that is with line drive percentage. The quick and messy way to estimate what BABIP "should" be is to add .110 or .120 to LD%, but that's really just an approximation.

Using that .110 to calculate, here's the Cubs so far in BABIP:

So of regulars, Castro and Castillo have been the "luckiest", and Rizzo, DeJesus, and Soriano have all been very "unlucky".

i don't like this because it ignores a ton of relevant data (i trust you would agree, but likely used it for the sake of simplicity)

using an updated method: http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/11/10/1124792/a-new-xbabip-calculator

it comes out like

actual babip (xbabip)

Rizzo: .185 (.333)

Castro: .348 (.338)

Castillo: .444 (.346)

DeJesus: .310 (.383)

Soriano: .350 (.402)

Schierholtz: .379 (.354)

.333-babip Rizzo would have roughly a .259/.364/.520 line right now

Big Z just pulled into Wrigley players parking lot. No joke. I'm assuming he's just visiting... or looking for a job. #zambranoforcloser

File this one over sure, why the hell not.

He gonna take grounders at first too?

He could outhit Rizzo right now

The homerun to strikeout ratio would probably be similar.

Just there visiting. No interest from Cubs, via just about everyone on Twitter.

I believe he still owns a house near Wellington and Paulina, probably just stopping by

I find it hard to believe that there are over 350 better pitchers in the world than Carlos Zambrano who is not on a Major League Roster.

Man. 2015? 2016? That's a lot of games. Question is, just how bad are they going to be during the time it takes to get there.?
