Sony owns the trademarked brand name 'Jumbotron'. But they'll sell you the 'Betamax' brand name for the right price.

On Saturday on The Score Bruce Levine insisted that in 2019-2020 the Cubs will have a media deal for $170M(over $1M per game). He said currently the club brings in $600K+ per game on local tv. He also mentioned the White Sox would be in the same revenue range. That really floored me. The Sox don't have the fan base locally or nationally to bring in that kind of money.

the cubs current tv deal gives them 600k a game?

A friend at WGN radio told me the TRIB lost $85K profit for each Cubs game not broadcast during the strike in the 90's. Seemed like a cash cow to me.

And that was before DVrs maxes sports tv so valuable

According to the article below it's even less, though Brett admits it's not verified but rumored. They get $300k a game from WGN and $500k a game from Comcast.

yeah, that's more along the lines of what i was thinking.

So yeah, we are receiving about 1/2-3/4 less than a team in a market like ours should get. Awesome :good:

Mooney is reporting Cubs are looking into working with Fox to create their own network by 2020.

I feel like that's along the lines of what ABTY was saying a month or two ago.

For those who haven't clicked, it says the Cubs would work with Fox locally to take the WGN games as sort of a bridge to anotherRSN deal after the CSN deal is up.

But isn't the current CSN deal up after 2016? Sure would be nice to capitalize on that before 2020 or 2019.

The Cubs are locked into WGN for one more season, and Comcast SportsNet Chicago has exclusive cable rights through 2019. So one concept being discussed is a bridge deal that would put X-number of games on a local Fox affiliate during that five-year window, before taking the full schedule to a new channel in 2020.

Not that I've watched a ton of the Cubs the last couple of years, but I'd be really annoyed with the Cubs being on a local Chicago channel. I already don't get CLTV games. Hopefully there will be some kind of simulcast on other channels downstate.

Well, it's the only way the Cubs can get competition for the WGN games, so [expletive] you Brandon!

So this is the "positivity" theme they're conjuring up this week, in time for the convention, I guess. So the potential "our payroll is pitiful" stuff has a light at the end of the tunnel for everyone. I can't wait to see Ricketts take on questions, my guess is they pick and choose extremely carefully.

You would think they'd have to have some sort of agreement with local affiliates to broadcast games in the Cubs territory that aren't in the Chicago tv market. I can't imagine they'd be able to make any real money if they didn't.

He will get more questions about the mascot and Castro being a head case than he will about his robbing the team blind

And what’s better content than the Chicago Cubs crawling their way to a World Series title?

Crawling? Really? You had to say crawling?

That scares the [expletive] out of me. He's as frustrated as we are.

Edit: It's also a prime spot for a misquote, as you could have said "clawing", I guess.

That whole thing is about how the next TV contract, that starts in 2020 (assuming the current one lasts through 2019 and not just until 2019), is being sold as an opportunity to televise the Cubs first world series champ. That would indicate they are telling their potential partners they don't expect to win until 2020 at least. Obviously, you can come to an agreement before that season, maybe 2-3 years earlier? So after they sign a deal they can try again in 2018?

It's like they have a motivation to not win yet.

The quote from Theo was in response to being asked by Wittenmyer about finding a taker for the WGN games (and his sassy response to Wittenmyer thinking nobody was interested). It's from the CSN appearance last month.

And I wouldn't read anything into using the word "crawling" beyond the fact that baseball seasons are long as [expletive] and it's something to watch daily.

That's how I read it, too.

The block quote:

“The story of the journey of the Chicago Cubs towards their first world championship in over a century is compelling. It’s going to be on your TV screen every day.

The biggest factor in all this is that there’s less and less content on TV that you need to see each day without DVR-ing. So what makes baseball attractive to TV networks is the fact that you have to watch it each night if you’re a fan. You can’t tape a game and watch it two weeks later. It’s already outdated. You can’t speed through the commercials. It’s daily content. And what’s better content than the Chicago Cubs crawling their way to a World Series title?

You would want to buy stock in the Cubs’ TV rights.”

I'm not sure why you would interpret it otherwise.

Because it's about selling the longterm TV rights and he used the word crawling.

I'm not sure how you could not be sure how somebody could interpret it that way.

I don't get your question. It seems pretty clear what that means.

But seriously. It's extremely clear what he's talking about. He's talking about how it's the only thing you watch on a daily basis and that you need to pretty much watch the games live right before he talks about them crawling their way to a championship. He's clearly talking game by game there.

I don't get how you people could possibly pretend it is not open to interpretation.

The topic is selling TV rights, that's a multi-year thing. I've heard the sprint vs a marathon comparison before, but crawling? No.
